DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Kate Fleming scored five goals and added an assist to lead the University of Oregon to a 13-6 win over UC Davis in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at Aggie Field Sunday.
The Aggies drop to 1-2 for the season, and 0-2 in MPSF play. The Ducks even their conference and overall mark to 1-1.
Junior attacker Katie McMahon led UC Davis offensively, scoring four goals and assisted on one of teammate Patrice Clark's two scores.
McMahon put her team on the scoreboard first, converting a free-position attempt just 4:54 into the game. Duck attacker Jana Bradley evened the game less than a minute later, then Fleming set up Theresa Waldron on a goal at 7:23 to give UO its first lead.
The Aggies tied the score a second time as midfielder Megan O'Connor picked up an errant clear attempt, then McMahon and Clark combined for a goal at the 12:47 mark. Oregon broke a long scoreless stretch in the 25th minute when Lindsay Killian connected with Jenny Browne in transition, launching a run of four unanswered Duck goals to end the first half.
Facing a 6-2 halftime deficit, McMahon beat two defenders to score an unassisted goal just two minutes into the second half. Aggie sophomore Katie McGovern won the next draw but Ilsa van den Berg forced a turnover that led to Killian's first goal at 32:33.
On the next possession, McMahon again cut the lead to three goals on an unassisted drive at 33:15. However, Fleming scored back-to-back goals at 36:47 and 40:37, igniting a 6-1 UO run through the second half. Clark tacked on her second goal in the 56th minute to bring the score to its final 13-6 margin.
UC Davis goalie Hilary Harkins had 10 saves against the 13 Duck goals. Junior Jen Sanderson had a solid game defensively, causing four turnovers, winning five ground balls and one draw.
Anna Poponyak and Allison O'Brien split time in the Duck crease. Poponyak had six saves against six Aggie goals in just more than 40 minutes of play. O'Brien had three saves against three goals in her relief outing.
Sunday's game represents the first Duck victory in the two-year series between the two teams. The Aggies won the two 2005 matchups by a total of three goals.
