Cardinal Defense Slows Aggies In 9-4 Defeat At Schaal

Davis, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Stanford Cardinal converted four 6-on-5 goals off six chances and used a powerful defensive attack to defeat 14th-ranked UC Davis 9-4 on Sunday afternoon at the Schaal Aquatics Center in front of 607 fans.

The loss drops the Aggies to 13-13 overall this season while the Cardinal improve to 14-6.

Trevor Long led the Aggies with penalty goals in the first and fourth quarters while Stanford was led by Ryan Fortune and Janson Wigo, who each scored two goals. Jimmie Sandman patrolled the Stanford goal and came down with a game-high 12 saves, six of which came in the third quarter. Mike McGee also had a solid game in net for the Ags as he saved nine shots.

Stanford struck first as Wigo opened things up with a 6-on-5 goal 53 seconds into the game to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead. The Aggies would tie the score moments later off a penalty goal by Long. Another man-up goal by Stanford's Sage Wright made the score 1-2 after one quarter.

In a relatively quite second period, Stanford scored their third straight man-up goal under a minute in to pull ahead by two. The Cardinal ended the half with another goal to push their lead to 4-1.

Stanford continued where they left off as they opened the second half with another 6-on-5 goal and two normal goals to blow the game wide open at 7-1 heading into the final quarter.

The Aggies fought back in the early moments of the fourth quarter as Nick Arrigo broke the scoreless streak with a goal three minutes in. Long connected on his second penalty shot just a little over 30 seconds later to pull the Aggies within four at 3-7. Stanford would answer back with two straight goals from Michael Bury and Ryan McCarthy to seal the victory. Kevin Bacharach ended the game with a goal with 35 seconds remaining to make the final score 4-9.

The Aggies will play their final home game at Schaal this Sunday, Nov. 12 as they welcome No. 2 Cal. The game, which is scheduled to begin at noon, will mark the final home contest for five UC Davis seniors.
