Despite Early Lead Aggies Fall To No. 4 Stanford

Sept. 10, 2005

STANFORD, Calif. - No.11 ranked UC Davis fell 9-7 to no. 4 Stanford this afternoon in a game played at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center. Six Aggies scored in the match-up with Kevin Bacharach leading the effort with two goals. UC Davis' season record now stands at 3-2.

Patrick Jacobson posted the first goal of the game during a 6-on-5 opportunity giving UC Davis the early lead. The Cardinals were able to get one on the board, tying the game with 1:25 left in the first quarter of play.

Josh McNeely and Joseph Smith each scored following Cardinal ejections in the second quarter, but Stanford was able to outscore the Aggies 4-2 giving them a 5-3 lead going into halftime.

UC Davis continued to fight in the third as Jesse Tweed and David Welch scored back-to-back goals narrowing the Cardinall lead to 6-5. Stanford, however, was able to tally the following three goals.

The Aggies were able to outscore Stanford 2-1 in the fourth quarter with both of UC Davis' goals being provided by Kevin Bacharach, but it was not enough to overtake the lead. The final score put Stanford ahead 9-7.

"We were prepared, the team did what we had talked about," explained head coach Steve Doten. "They responded well and played well. We did well in the first quarter, got down in the second and then were able to come back hard."

"I'm happy, I like their confidence and their `never say die' attitude," continued Doten. "This shows me that they are coachable, hungry and want to do it."

UC Davis will travel to Stockton tomorrow to play Pacific at noon.
