LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The UC Davis men's water polo team finished fourth in the Western Water Polo Association for the third straight season as they fell to Redlands 6-5 in the third place match of this year's WWPA Championships being held this weekend at Loyola Marymount's Burns Recreation and Aquatic Center in Los Angeles, Calif. Host team, No. 2 seed Loyola Marymount upset No. 1 seed UC San Diego in the championship game to receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.
The Aggies got on the board first when David Welch scored on a four-meter penalty shot early in the first quarter. Redlands fired back less than a minute later when Ryan Hall scored his first of three goals. The following possession Patrick Jacobson tallied a goal for the Aggies. With 1:28 left in the first quarter, Tony Rona tied the game at 2-2.
In the second quarter, Redlands scored three unanswered goals to put the Bulldogs ahead 5-2 going into the second half. UC Davis made a comeback in the third when Trevor Long scored within the first minute of the quarter. Grant Muenter followed with another Aggie goal to bring the score to 5-4. During the next possession, Redland's Ryan Hall scored his third goal of the game. With 2:25 left in the third quarter, Long scored his second goal the game on a man-up power play bringing the Aggies within one-point of the Bulldogs.
In the fourth quarter, both the teams were held scoreless for the entire seven minutes and the game ended with Redlands defeating UC Davis 6-5.
The Aggies finished this season with an overall record of 16-15.
