DAVIS, Calif. - The Aggie men's water polo team finished the Aggie Shootout with two wins over Cal Baptist and Air Force on Sunday at Schaal Aquatics Center. UC Davis defeated Cal Baptist 8-3 and Air Force 10-3 to complete the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record. In other tournament action the Pacific Tigers defeated Cal Baptist 9-3 and Air Force 14-9.
In the early morning match-up between the Aggies and the Cal Baptist Lancers, almost a full five minutes passed before Kevin Bacharach posted the first goal of the game off of an assist from Patrick Jacobson. The Aggie offense picked up the pace in the second with three goals scored, including back-to-back goals from Conor Duignan. Heading into halftime the Ags led 4-0.
The Lancers were able to put themselves on the board 4:48 into the third when Brandon Jung scored his first of two goals on a man-up power play. The Aggies countered scoring another three goals provided by Jacobson, Nick Arrigo and David Welch.
In the final quarter each team managed to score a man-up goal and as the buzzer sounded on the fourth quarter the Aggies had the win sealed at 8-3.
In the second game of the day Pacific faced the Air Force Falcons. Pacific opened the first quarter with two goals from Dragan Bakic and one from Clint McLaughlin. Justin Berry was able to get the Falcons on the board in the second with a sweep shot goal which was followed by a backhand goal a minute later putting Air Force one-point behind the Tigers.
The Tigers fired back scoring four goals in the third to Air Force's one and then held the Falcons scoreless in the fourth. Tiger Clint McLaughlin had four goals in the win.
The Tigers used some momentum from their previous game to come out strong against Cal Baptist later in the day. Pacific's Matt Mitchell scored a hat trick in the first quarter while Bakic and McLaughlin each added one goal apiece. The lone scorer in the first for the Lancers was Leonardo Laterza with his first of four goals. The Tigers held the lead throughout the game but the Lancers were able to outscore the Tigers in the final quarter 4-3. The fourth quarter performance, however, was not enough to grab the win. Pacific defeated Cal Baptist 14-9. McLaughlin scored an impressive five goals for the Tigers in the victory.
In the final game of the day, the Aggies faced Western Water Polo Association foe Air Force for the first time this season. Air Force came out and posted two goals within a minute of each other, both being scored by Jeff Donaldson giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Nick Arrigo got UC Davis on the board with 2:35 on the clock and then with 30 seconds left in the quarter, Kevin Bacharach got free on a fast break counter-attack and scored to tie the game at 2-2.
The Aggie offense kicked into gear in the second with Jacobson scoring two goals and Jesse Tweed and David Welch each posting one. The Aggies were able to hold the Falcons scoreless in the second and third quarters. The Aggies came away with a 10-3 win. Jacobson led UC Davis with four goals total in the game.
With Sunday's two wins, the Aggies' season record now stands at 15-10 and their WWPA conference record is 11-1. The Aggies' will face two tough conference opponents next weekend when they travel to Los Angeles to face Loyola Marymount on Friday and then they will travel to San Diego to play UC San Diego on Saturday. UC San Diego handed the Aggies their lone conference loss earlier in the season.
