Aggie Shootout Day Two Results

Oct. 29, 2005

DAVIS, Calif. - Six games were played on Saturday, the second day of the 2005 Aggie Shootout, which is being held at the Schaal Aquatics Center through Sunday. A pair of sudden death overtime games highlighted Saturday's play with BYU-Hawaii narrowly defeating Air Force 11-10 and Cal Baptist pulling off an 8-7 victory over Santa Clara.

The first game of the day pitted the Lancers of Cal Baptist against the Banana Slugs of UC Santa Cruz. UC Santa Cruz's Joel McKown scored the first goal of the game less than a minute into play, but Lancer Leonardo Laterza tied things up shortly thereafter scoring on a penalty shot. The Lancers took the lead towards the end of the first and did not relinquish it for the remainder of the game.

Cal Baptist defeated UC Santa Cruz 9-6. Brandon Jung led the Lancers with a hat trick scored in the third quarter. Banana Slugs Aldo Olivieri and Joel McKown each had two goals in the loss.

The next game was between Pacific and BYU-Hawaii. The first quarter featured a pair of goals from each team and the score was tied at the end of the first. Pacific took a one-point lead in the second following a pair of goals from Dragan Bakic. The Tigers continued to control the game with Bakic scoring an impressive six total goals in the match-up. The final score was 13-9 in favor of Pacific.

Next on the schedule was Santa Clara versus Air Force. Air Force scored first with a penalty shot by Clark Condict in the first quarter. The Broncos got on the board in the second with a power play goal by Jack Wall. The Broncos trailed by only one point the majority of the match but were unable to overcome the first quarter deficit ending the game with 4-3 loss. In the win Air Force goalie Denver Saunders blocked two four-meter penalty shots.

Pacific and UC Santa Cruz faced-off in the third game of the day with Dragan Bakic helping the Tigers take an early lead scoring a hat trick in the first half. At the end of the second quarter Pacific led 7-1. UC Santa Cruz was able to outscore the Tigers in the third with Justin Garver and Kevin Smith each scoring a pair of goals for the Banana Slugs. At the end of the game Pacific led 13-8, with six of its goals having been scored by Bakic.

In the afternoon game between BYU-Hawaii and Air Force the game started with a first quarter tie of 2-2. Air Force was able to take a two-point lead in the second but BYU-Hawaii quickly recovered and possessed a 7-6 lead going into the fourth quarter. Matt LeBlanc of Air Force stepped-up and tied the game with 2:32 remaining in regulation play.

In the first three-minute overtime period neither team was able to score, but in the following period each team scored one before Air Force's Justin Berry scored on a man-up situation with 36 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Falcons the one-point lead. Just as the clock wound down on the second overtime period and it looked as though Air Force would clinch the win, a penalty shot was called on the Falcons for an illegal entry following an ejection.

BYU-Hawaii's Koen Plasmeijer scored on the penalty shot to tie the game at 10-10 and send the teams into sudden death. Seasider James Jacobson scored 2:50 into the sudden death overtime to give BYU-Hawaii the 11-10 win.

The final match-up of the day was between Santa Clara and Cal Baptist. The first quarter of the match ended the same as the previous match with a 2-2 tie. Both teams scored another pair of goals in the second quarter to keep things tied at 4-4 leading into halftime. Kevin Callister of Cal Baptist broke the tie early in the third and the Lancers were able to hold a one-point lead through the majority of the fourth quarter. When it looked as if Cal Baptist would come away with the win, Bronco Tom Hendrickson converted a power play goal with six seconds remaining on the clock to tie the game at 6-6.

Each team scored one in the first overtime period to keep things tied at 7-7. There were no goals or ejections in the second three-minute period sending the game into sudden death.
