STOCKTOON, Calif. - Junior Jay Westerlund fired an opening-day 3-under par, 141, and sits tied for 16th, five strokes off the lead following the first two rounds of the Pacific Invitational, played Monday afternoon at The Reserve at Spanos Park. As a team, the Aggies completed the first two rounds at even-par and are tied for 11th, 19 strokes off the pace set by first-day leader UCLA.
UCLA (-19) holds a six-shot lead over Coastal Carolina (-13) and an 11-stroke advantage over UC Irvine (-8). San Jose State (-7) along with Oregon State (-6) and UC Riverside (-6) round out the top five.
Individually, Long Beach State's Chris Gilley is the opening-day leader after firing back-to-back, 4-under par 68's on Monday. Coastal Carolina's Alvero Velasco (-7) and Nevada's Ian Hagen (-7) are one shot off the lead while there is a four-way tie for fourth at 6-under par.
Westerlund had an opening-round of even-par, 72, but came back in the afternoon to card a 3-under par, 69. Westerlund's teammate, junior Scott Gordon, shot a 2-under par, 70, in the morning round followed by a 1-over par, 73, in the afternoon to finish the day at 1-under par and tied for 22nd. Other Aggies include Eric Restrepo, whose back-to-back even-par 72's have him tied for 30th, while Chris Kilkenny is in 54th at 4-over par and Brett Borchers is tied for 65th at 8-over par.
"I thought we competed well today and hit a lot of good shots," said Aggie Head Coach Cy Williams. "We lost a some shots over the final three or four holes and that is what we need to address on Tuesday, to finish stronger. We'll come out tomorrow and play well."
Play concludes at the Pacific Invitational on Tuesday morning with a final 18-holes at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
