UC Davis Falls To Grand Canyon In Season Finale

Aug. 20, 2002

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Eddie Turner scored a career-high 28 points and the Antelopes withstood a late Aggie rally as Grand Canyon jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 99-93, victory over UC Davis in a season-ending California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball game Saturday night played before 471 at Antelope Gymnasium.

With the loss, UC Davis concludes it 2001-02 season with a 15-12 record, 12-10 in CCAA play while Grand Canyon finished with a 10-17 mark, 8-14 in conference action.

Grand Canyon came out hot to start the game as Jovian Dobrzenski had it going early. He connected on three three-pointers in the opening three minutes as the Antelopes raced to an 11-4 lead at the 17:13 mark. UC Davis would cut the lead to two following a pair of free throws from Tyler Boyd, but the Antelopes responded with a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 10-point lead.

The lead would remain in double digits for much of the half with UC Davis ending the period with a Dominic Callori jumper at the buzzer, cutting the Antelope lead to six at 45-39. As hot as Dobrzenski was early, Callori was equally impressive. Callori scored UC Davis' first eight points and finished the first half with a CCAA -leading 11th double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The second half belonged to Turner and the hot shooting of the Antelopes. The Grand Canyon senior would score 10 of the Antelopes first 14 points in the half as the lead was ping-ponging between five and nine points in the opening few minutes of the half. Callori picked up his fourth foul just 1:15 into the second period and was forced to take a seat on the bench which allowed Turner to go to work.

Arthur Daniels gave the Antelopes a 10-point lead following a three-pointer at the 12:52 mark. The lead would remain in double figures for the next 10 minutes as each time the Aggies looked to make a charge, Grand Canyon responded with a big basket. Forced to foul, UC Davis had hoped poor Antelope free throw shooting would get them back into the game and it almost worked.

With under a minute to play, UC Davis had cut the lead to 10 and when Gus Argenal hit a three-pointer with :35 left, the Aggies appeared to have life. But they would not get over the hump as Dobrzenski and Sean Harris each made one of two free throws to keep the Aggies at bay. Ryan Moore's three-pointer with six seconds remaining cut the final margin to six at 99-93.

For the half, Grand Canyon shot an unthinkable 70.4 percent from the field, connecting on 19 of 27 shots. They hit both of their three-point attempts and finished the night shooting 55.4 percent. For his part, Turner ended the half connecting on nine of 10 shots as he scored 18 of his 28 points in the second period.

The hot shooting overshadowed a tremendous effort from Callori, who finished the evening with a career-high 30 points along with 15 rebounds.

Patrick McDuffie tied his career-high with 18 points, all coming in the second half and Moore finished with a season-best 15 points. Danny Workman added a career-high eight assists.

"I'm really proud of the way this team competed all season," said Aggie Head Coach Brian Fogel. "It didn't turn out the way we had hoped, but we battled hard each and every game."

The night marked the final Aggie game for Boyd, McDuffie, Brent Wyse and Jed Maddela. Boyd finished his Aggie career third on the school's all-time assists list and fifth all-time in steals.

In addition to Turner, the Antelopes got 22 points from Dobrzenski, while Daniels finished with 14 and Del Somers had 11.
