2022-23 Causeway Cup

79488

Although Sacramento State and UC Davis have been rivals for years, it was not until the 2004-05 season that the Causeway Cup was born. In the Cup's inaugural year, UC Davis claimed the title. Since that first competition, the Hornets have won cups in 2005-06, 2006-07, 2008-09 and 2011-12. UC Davis also claimed the title in 2007-08, 2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19. The award was not given in 2019-20 and 2020-21 due to various competition challenges and pauses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Aggies prevailed 45-35.01 in 2021-22 and now lead the 18-year history of the award 12-4. The 2021-22 year saw UC Davis' women's cross country team finish in ninth at the NCAA West Regional to the Hornets' 20th place finish. Aggie gymnastics and beach volleyball also swept a pair matchups each with the Hornets. UC Davis' men's and women's tennis teams won a match each, as did Aggie men's and women's soccer. Women's basketball won 75-46 at the Golden 1 Center and men's golf finished sixth at the El Macero Classic, two spots above Sac State.

Each of the schools' 18 common teams usually compete against each other at least once during the year. The winner is given the pre-determined amount of five points. If the two schools meet just once in a season, then all the points will go to the winning team. But if the teams play each other two or more times, the points are divided by how many meetings occur. For example, if the two softball teams play each other twice in the upcoming year, each meeting is worth 2.5 points.

The exceptions to this rule are cross country and track & field, sports for which it is common for a school to field a partial team. Furthermore, most track & field meets do not feature team scoring. Starting in 2013-14, the cross country points will be based on the NCAA West Regional. Track & field points are determined by the annual Causeway Dual meet.

Another exception to the rule, effective 2014-15, is in women's gymnastics. The two "home and home" meets shall be the only competitions that count toward the Causeway Cup. The NorCal Classic, the conference championships and any other neutral-site meeting will not appear on the standings. Effective 2018-19, beach volleyball will follow the same rules as gymnastics: only home-and-home, regular-season matches will count toward the Cup.
