Although Sacramento State and UC Davis have been rivals for years, it was not until the 2004-05 season that the Causeway Cup was born. In the Cup's inaugural year, UC Davis claimed the title. The Hornets won the next two Cups before UC Davis regained the title in 2007-08 with a dominating performance. Then in 2008-09, the Cup returned to Sac State, which overcame a 32.50-0 deficit to claim the victory. The 2009-10 and 2010-11 athletic years returned the Causeway Cup to UC Davis, then the Hornets evened the series at 4-4 with a 52.5-47.5 victory last year. 2004-05 Results |  2005-06 Results | 2006-07 Results | 2007-08 Results | 2008-09 Results | 2009-10 Results | 2010-11 Results | 2011-12 Results Each of the schools' 17 common teams usually compete against each other at least once during the year. The winner is given the pre-determined amount of points of either five or 10. If the two schools meet just once in a season, then all the points will go to the winning team. But if the teams play each other two times or more, the points are divided by how many meetings occur. For example, the two softball teams play each other twice in the upcoming year. Thus, each meeting is worth 2.5 points. The exceptions to this rule are cross country and track & field, sports for which it is common for a school to field a partial team. Furthermore, most track & field meets do not feature team scoring. Instead, the designated cross country meet is agreed upon by the two institutions, while the track & field points are determined by the annual dual meet. In November 2012, ScholarShare, the state's 529 college investment plan, became the title sponsor for the award in a joint partnership with the two universities. |
