Although Sacramento State and UC Davis have been rivals for years, it was not until the 2004-05 season that the Causeway Cup was born. In the Cup's inaugural year, UC Davis claimed the title. Since that first competition, the Hornets have won cups in 2005-06, 2006-07, 2008-09 and 2011-12. UC Davis has also claimed the title in 2007-08, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2012-13, entering this 10th season with a 5-4 edge.

Each of the schools' 17 common teams usually compete against each other at least once during the year. The winner is given the pre-determined amount of points of either five or 10. If the two schools meet just once in a season, then all the points will go to the winning team. But if the teams play each other two times or more, the points are divided by how many meetings occur. For example, the two softball teams play each other twice in the upcoming year. Thus, each meeting is worth 2.5 points.

The exceptions to this rule are cross country and track & field, sports for which it is common for a school to field a partial team. Furthermore, most track & field meets do not feature team scoring. Starting in 2013-14, the cross country points will be based on the NCAA West Regional. Track & field points are determined by the annual Causeway Dual meet.

In November 2012, ScholarShare, the state's 529 college investment plan, became the title sponsor for the award in a joint partnership with the two universities.
