PROVIDENCE, R.I. — UC Davis men's water polo wrapped up play at the Bruno Classic in a shootout with No. 5 Fordham on Sunday, Aug. 30. The Aggies finish the tournament 3-1 after falling 10-13 to the Rams.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- After winning the opening sprint, Oriol Viñas took advantage on the powerplay with a goal off a pass from Thomas Kiesling.
- Following the first strike from the Rams, Oleg Shatskikh countered with a score of his own, following it up four minutes later with another goal to give his team a 3-1 advantage after the first quarter.
- The Fordham defense came up big throughout the second quarter, keeping Davis off the board while tying things up at three goals apiece.
- With 1:45 left in the half, Max Prokhin took a pass from Gabe Bensen to give the Aggies another lead.
- As the Rams responded with another score on the next possession, Thomas Marr came back down the other end, finding the back of the net for a score. Making the score 5-4 in favor of Davis entering halftime.
- Coming back into the pool, Fordham found the back of the net for an equalizer. Out of a timeout following a Ram exclusion, Lucas Wulfhorst followed up his fantastic play from Saturday with his first of the day.
- The back-and-forth affair continued for the rest of the third period, with Viñas getting the last score for the Aggies in the frame on a powerplay.
- As Fordham entered the fourth up 8-7, Kiesling battled for his first score of the day one minute into the period.
- Wulfhorst and Kiesling would tack on their second scores late, but a five goal quarter proved to be the difference maker for the Rams, who would pull away for a 13-10 victory.
UP NEXT: The Aggies return home for the first time this season to host the annual Aggie Roundup from Sept. 5-6. The two day tournament begins with a matchup against UCLA on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 8:00 am PT.
