THE SHORT STORY: UC Davis went toe-to-toe with Stanford for 12 innings before dropping a 6-5 decision on Monday night at Sunken Diamond, with the Cardinal walking off in the bottom of the 12th.
Braydon Wooldridge powered the Aggie offense with a 3-for-6 night and two RBI, and
Jaxon Murphy delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the top of the 12th to put UC Davis ahead 5-4. Six Aggie pitchers combined to allow just four earned runs across 11.1 innings against a Stanford lineup that was fresh off a series sweep of nationally ranked Florida State.
LEADING OFF
- Wooldridge finished 3-for-6 with two RBI, scored once and drove in two of UC Davis's five runs
- Murphy went 2-for-2 with a walk after entering as a pinch hitter, capped by an RBI double in the top of the 12th
- Tyler Howard added a 2-for-5 night with a walk and a run scored
- Mason Lerma struck out four in two innings of one-run relief on 40 pitches
- Carter Speights tossed two scoreless innings of one-hit ball with a strikeout on 28 pitches
- Grayson Bonanno worked three innings of one-run baseball, allowing three hits with no walks on 47 pitches in his start on the hill
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stanford broke the scoreless tie in the third on a Cort MacDonald RBI groundout that plated Jimmy Nati for a 1-0 lead.
- UC Davis answered in the fourth when Wooldridge singled to left center to score McNeal and tie the game 1-1.
- The Cardinal retook the lead in the fifth as MacDonald singled to left center, scoring Nolan Stoll for a 2-1 advantage.
- UC Davis drew even in the seventh on a wild pitch that scored Wooldridge from third, with pinch hitter Eli Burnham advancing to third on the same pitch to tie the game 2-2.
- The Aggies grabbed their first lead in the eighth when Wooldridge's RBI groundout to second plated Lee for a 3-2 edge.
- Stanford tied the game in the ninth on Philip Cheong's RBI double down the left field line that scored Brock Sell.
- UC Davis pushed back ahead in the 10th as Mault came home from second on a wild pitch to make it 4-3.
- Stanford answered in the bottom of the 10th on JJ Moran's RBI single, plating Rashad Hayes to tie the game at four.
- Murphy delivered the go-ahead RBI double in the top of the 12th, scoring Howard for a 5-4 Aggie lead.
- Stanford walked it off in the bottom of the 12th, with Eric Jeon's RBI single tying the game and Moran's two-out RBI single to right-center scoring MacDonald for the 6-5 win.
