The short story: Four runs over in the fifth and sixth frames put UC Davis softball in position to complete a comeback against Utah Valley, but the deficit proved to be one run to much for the Aggies in a midweek match up against the Wolverines.
Â
LEADING OFF
- Naomi Kalanetra had a big day, smashing a home run in her second-straight game while going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored
- Gia Felice proved a strong performance at the dish, going 2-for-3 with one run score, two RBIs and one walk drawn, and she added a stolen base to the mix
- Vanessa Calvillo, making her first start of the season, took center field and had a solid day in the box, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored
- Ashley Sawai proved a strong 1.1 of relief, giving up no earned runs while striking out two and allowing no walksÂ
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Utah Valley opened the game with three runs in the first to take an early 3-0 lead, and they would add one more in the third to make it 4-0 before the Aggies would start to chip away
- In the third, the Aggies started to work their way back into the game, when Calvillo was knocked in by Felice with an RBI single to right field to make it 4-1
- In the fifth, the big blow came off the bat of Kalanetra who took a 2-0 pitch deep into the Davis sky clearing the fence in dead center to score Felice and make it 4-3
- Utah Valley would score two more big runs in the sixth, building out their lead to 6-3
- In the bottom half of the sixth, UC Davis cut deep into the Utah Valley lead runs when Felice knocked one in and Calvillo scored on a wild pitch, making it 6-5
- But the two runs scored in the top half of the six would be the difference as the Aggies could not get the tying run across the plate in the seventh and would fall short of the comeback losing 6-5
