The short story: After dropping its first game of the day, UC Davis softball bounced back in an exciting way using a
Kayla Macias walk-off single in the seventh to secure a win in the second game of the day's Big West opening doubleheader and put them in position to win the series on Saturday.
Â
LEADING OFF
- Caroline Grimes was a force in both games, throwing a total of eight innings over the two games with a complete game, 10 strikeouts and only two earned runs while allowing just two walks
- Ashley Sawai was not to be outdone in the circle, throwing six strong innings of one run ball, allowing no walks over her start in the second game
- Alyssa Dethlefson and Marley Panziera each recorded a pair of hits over the two games, with Panziera smacking a double and Dethlefson drawing two walks while adding a pair of stolen bases
- Sydney Polli provided pop for the Aggies, smashing a triple in the first game, while Rylee Reeves added a double of her own
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
- Hawai'i would do its damage in the third inning, scoring the four runs they needed to eventually win the game
- Grimes was lights out all game, striking out eight, including the side in the fourth inning
- Polli's two out triple in the sixth, put UC Davis in position to get on the board late but after final out was recorded Polli would remain at third
- During the game the Aggie bats could not get going, and after Hawai'i added one more in the seventh, the 5-0 doubleheader opening win for Hawai'i was securedÂ
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
- In the second game, Sawai set the tone from the first pitch allowing just two base runners over the first three innings helping the Aggies hold their early lead
- UC Davis got its early lead in the opening frame, when Gia Felice scored from third when Maya Ichimura committed an error on a wild play that saw Dethlefson get thrown out a home on a force play
- Sawai continued to hold Hawai'i in check over the next few frames, but in the fifth the Rainbow Wahine snagged a run to tie things up at 1-1
- After Grimes came in to cap things off in the top of the seventh, the Aggies were in position to walk things off in the bottom half of the frame
- Reeves led off with a scorching double to center, and after being pinch run for by Venessa Calvillo, Amanda Baldwin laid down a sacrifice that put an Aggie runner 60-feet away from victory and one out
- Abby Lee was hit by a pitch and Dethlefson walked to set up Macias with the bases loaded and one out
- With a 2-2 count, the Aggie junior smashed a single into left field and over a jumping Ichimura easily bringing home Calvillo to score the winning run for a 2-1 Aggie victory
