LA JOLLA, Calif. — UC Davis women's water polo continued its winning ways in La Jolla on Saturday, Mar. 28, defeating No. 23 Brown 17-13 in a high-scoring battle. Following Friday's defensive thriller against UC San Diego, the Aggies flipped the script to showcase their offensive depth, racking up 17 goals to secure their second victory of the SoCal road weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Chelsea Johnson ignited the scoring in the first minute, converting a power-play opportunity off an Ashley Wallin assist.
- After Brown leveled the match at 1-1, Wallin reclaimed the lead with back-to-back goals, including a strike assisted by Lillie Vehling.
- Gianna Nocetti extended the cushion to 4-1 with a clinical power-play goal midway through the first before a late Brown penalty shot made it 4-2 heading into the second.
- The Bears pulled within one to open the second period, but Sadie Henry answered immediately with a man-advantage strike.
- Wallin secured her hat trick with a 6-on-5 conversion to maintain the lead, followed by a late Margo Tempel strike to give UC Davis a 7-4 advantage at the half.
- Brown opened the second half with a 2-0 run to cut the lead to 7-6, but Ali Giusti halted the momentum with a power-play goal off a Wallin assist.
- Nocetti and Vehling padded the cushion midway through the third with back-to-back goals to push the lead to 10-6.
- Sofia Bozzo capped the third frame with a goal off a Nina Albers assist, keeping Davis ahead 11-7 heading into the final period.
- Nocetti secured her hat trick to open the fourth, followed immediately by Wallin's fourth goal of the day to make it 13-8.
- Despite a relentless late-game surge from the Bears, Tempel took over the middle of the quarter, netting two crucial power-play goals in a three-minute span to keep Brown at bay.
- Johnson added her second power-play goal of the day to keep the Aggies comfortably in front down the stretch.
- Sarah Ellis-Keeler provided the final blow, scoring off a Caroline Oates assist in the final minute to seal the 17-13 victory.
UP NEXT: The Aggies will travel to Fullerton on Sunday, Mar. 29, to close out the weekend with a Big West conference clash against Cal State Fullerton at 12:00 p.m. PT.
