The short story: Gia Felice tied a program record with five hits, setting the pace in the victory for UC Davis softball at the leadoff spot helping the Aggies complete their weekend conference sweep with a 13-5 run-rule win over CSU Bakersfield.
Â
LEADING OFF
- Felice becomes the first Aggie to get five hits in a single game since Sarah Axelson reached the mark in 2010 and she becomes the fifth Aggie to ever get five hits in a single game
- The five-hit performance is also the seventh time an Aggie has had a game with those numbers, with Trisha Reinhardt accomplishing the goal three times in her career to go along with Axelson, Emily Hetnzer (2004) and Jenny Hall (1999)
- It also ties a Big West record, and she becomes the first Big West batter to get five hits in a game since 2018 when Long Beach State's Naomi Hernandez accomplished the feat
- Overall, Felice finished 5-for-5 with three runs scored, one double, and two RBIs
- Caroline Grimes had another strong start, collecting her 10th win of the season thanks to four strong innings where she struck out three and allowed just one walk
- Syndey Polli has a strong day at the dish, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, one double, one stolen base and two RBIs
- Alyssa Dethlefson, Naomi Kalanetra and Marley Panziera, batting three-through-five each provided a pair of hits, with Dethlefson hitting a triple and knocking in three runs to set the tone in the heart of the Aggie lineup
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UC Davis jumped ahead in the opening frame, scoring three runs from the start to quickly build a 3-0 lead
- The big blow in the inning came off the bat of the Dethlefson when the Aggie outfielder smashed a triple to left center that opened the scoring and brought home Felice who had led off the game with a single
- Bakersfield got one in the third but in the bottom of the fourth the Aggies had an answer, putting three more runs on the board
- Both Felice and Kalanetra recorded RBIs in the frame as the Aggies took advantage of sloppy defensive play from the Roadrunners to take a 6-1 lead heading into the fifth
- In that frame, CSU Bakersfield made things tight for the Aggies, scoring four runs when Hannah Garcia hit a grand slam to left field to bring the Roadrunners within one run
- UC Davis was not phased, responding immediately with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth, getting RBI base hits from Claire Shelton and Dethlefson to reestablish space between them and CSU Bakersfield at 9-7
- After Bakersfield did not score any runs in the top of the sixth, the Aggies took the hacks and with four runs capped things off in the sixth inning for a second time this weekend
- Kalanetra's double led things off and she would eventually come around when Polli smacked her third hit of the game
- Polli would come around, along with Vanessa Calvillo (PR) on an error in centerfield and it set up Felice to put the finishing touches on the Aggie weekend
- On an 1-2 count, Felice got her fifth hit of the game, when she brought home the winning run on an infield single using her program record tying hit to make it 13-5 with the Aggies celebrating
