The short story: Using 113 pitches and striking out five, UC Davis softball senior pitcher
Caroline Grimes tossed yet another complete game, leading the Aggies to a Saturday morning victory over Weber State on the second day of the Lyman Classic.
LEADING OFF
- Alyssa Dethlefson led the Aggie attack at the top, going 3-for-3 with one home run, two runs scored, two stolen bases and one RBI
- Grimes gave up just two earned runs and one walk in her seven innings of work
- Sydney Polli added some power of her own, smacking her second triple of the season while also drawing a pair of walks and stealing two bases
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Aggies took the lead in the first inning, when Gia Felice singled up the middle to score Dethlefson, who had led off the game with a single and then stole second base
- From there neither side could cross the plate until the fourth inning
- During that stretch, Grimes was locked in striking out a pair of batters while Naomi Kalanetra used her glove to help snag a pair of runners on the base paths
- Weber State got on the board in the fourth with a solo home run, but Grimes was not phased settling back in to not allow another run until the bottom of the seventh
- By then, the Aggies had already built out its lead using runs in the fifth and sixth to pull away
- Dethlefson smashed her second home run of the season when she launched one over the center field wall in the fifth inning to put the Aggie back in front 2-1
- But in the sixth UC Davis did real damage, building out a lead Weber State would not erase
- With two outs, Polli scored Reeves (walk) on a triple to right center, and after an Olivia McFarland walk, Abby Lee singled home Polli
- Dethlefson then drew a walk to load the bases and she was followed up by Felice, who got her second RBI of the game when she drew a bases loaded walk to put the Aggies up 5-1 heading into the final frame
- While Weber State would get one in the seventh, it was not enough as the Aggies finished off their 5-2 victory
