The short story: 13 total hits, led by leadoff hitter
Alyssa Dethlefson, powered UC Davis softball in its final game at the UNLV Desert Classic, pushing the Aggies past hosting UNLV in an offensive showdown in Vegas.
Â
LEADING OFF
- The Aggies recorded season highs at the dish in hits (13), RBIs (eight) and runs scored (10)
- UC Davis took three wins over five games at the UNLV Desert Classic, including both matchups with hosting UNLV, a future Mountain West Conference counterpart
- Dethlefson was 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot, scoring one run, hitting one double and knocking in one run
- Naomi Kalanetra showed off her power, smashing the first Aggie home run of the season while going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBIs and one double
- Olivia McFarland, Sydney Polli and Marley Panziera all added multi hit days at the dish, with those three Aggies alone being responsible for four of the Aggie runs and six of the Davis hits
- Ashley Sawai made the start, getting the win while battling through 6.1 innings of work, striking out a season high seven batters
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Aggies used the opening three frames to build out a five-run lead, getting run scoring hits from Polli, Kalanetra (double) and Kayla Macias
- Macias knocked in a pair at the end of the third to give the Aggies its 5-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the third, and despite two runs from UNLV the Aggies still sat in front after the first third of the game
- In the fifth, the Aggies used power to build out the lead a bit more with McFarland's triple to right field being the big blow that helped the Aggies put three on the board during the frame
- In the bottom half of the fifth, UNLV chipped away, four runs in the frame to get withing 9-6 after five
- UC Davis added one in the sixth, but another two runs from UNLV in that half of the frame meant the Aggie lead was only one heading into the seventh
- But it was here that Kalanetra flexed her swing, smashing the season's first deep shot of the season to give the Aggies an all-important insurance run
- During the seventh, UNLV would record a pair of hits, and at one point they had the tying runs on with one out
- It didn't phase Sawai, who locked in over the final two batters getting a strike out to end things and lock up the Davis 10-8 victory
