STANFORD, Calif. — After yesterday's back-to-back wins against Santa Clara and Fresno Pacific, UC Davis women's water polo closed out the season opening weekend taking on No. 1 Stanford, showcasing grit and a strong defense despite a 7-20 setback.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Sofia Bozzo opened the scoring for the Aggies in the second quarter, finding the back of the net with an assist from redshirt sophomore Lillie Vehling after UC Davis fell behind early.
- Stanford added two more goals before Bozzo struck again, this time off an assist from freshman Adi Englebert, giving the Aggies a spark midway through the quarter.
- Building off the momentum, junior Sadie Henry tallied back-to-back goals with an assist from junior Bridget Miller, keeping UC Davis within striking distance at 9-4 heading into halftime.
- In the third quarter, Eva Stein - redshirt sophomore and goalkeeper, anchored the defense, recording multiple saves and forcing a turnover, though the Cardinal extended their lead during the period.
- Junior Ashley Wallin opened the fourth-quarter scoring for UC Davis before Vehling added another goal soon after.
- Senior Liberty Massman closed out the Aggies' scoring late in the contest, converting an assist from senior Lucy Holland to cap UC Davis' seven-goal effort.
- The Aggies battled through the final whistle, with the contest concluding in a 20-7 result in favor of Stanford
UP NEXT: The Aggies will return to action next weekend to compete on Saturday, Jan. 24, and Sunday, Jan. 25 to face off in the Brigitte Donner Daws Memorial Invitational.
