The short story: 19 total saves from goalkeeper Baxter Chelsom led the way for UC Davis men's water polo, who dropped its first two home games of the season against Stanford and San Jose State.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • After a goal from Stanford got them on the board first, Oleg Shatskikh found the back of the net to even things up on the man advantage.
  • The Cardinal would strike again, but a power play goal from Thomas Marr had the score at 2-2 after the first.
  • Much of the second period was a defensive battle for both teams, with the Aggies forcing two exclusions of their opponent.
  • In the last two minutes of the half, the Cardinal would put two in the back of the net to go up 4-2 at the break.
  • Coming out of the half, Stanford would continue to score through the third, going on a 4-0 run before a last-second goal from Colin Nicholls made it 8-3.
  • After three more from Stanford, Ned Ginoti would get his first of the day before Max Prokhin would score his first collegiate goal to make it 11-5.
  • Stanford would score once more, but Ginoti would beat the buzzer for his second goal to make it 12-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • 15 seconds into the contest, Shatskikh would get his second of the day to give his team an early advantage.
  • But the Spartans' response was swift, finding the back of the net just a minute later to make it 1-1.
  • The back-and-forth battle continued with Timothy Kerr getting a score, San Jose State would respond just 30 seconds later, but Adam Ting would then cash one in to give his team a 3-2 lead after a high-scoring first.
  • The scoring affair continued into the second, as goals from Oriol Viñas and Prokhin would be broken up with San Jose goals.
  • With UC Davis leading 6-4 in the final two minutes of the half, the Spartans would tie things up with two scores going into the break.
  • San Jose State would take the lead in the third with three straight scores before Kerr would close the period with a goal to make it 9-7.
  • The Aggies would play strong defensively in period four, keeping the Spartans out of the net through the first five minutes of the quarter.
  • However, two quick scores from the road team would give them an 11-7 win.
