The short story: Double-digit kills from
Jade Light and
Victoria Vanos gave UC Davis volleyball its first win of the season over Causeway rival Sacramento State.
Â
FIRST SERVE
- Tonight's win was number 152 for head coach Dan Conners, putting him in a tie for second all-time in Aggie history with Marlene Piper.
- Tonight's win marks the first Aggie sweep over Sac State since September 13, 2016.
- A 15-kill, 15-dig double-double from Light led the offense. Light also led both teams in kills.
- Vanos had a solid all-around game with 13 kills, seven digs, and a solo block.
- Mia Starr effectively set up the offense with 37 assists.
- Ximena Cordero Barr and Haden Bones each had two service aces.
- 19 blocks from the Aggie defense limited Sacramento State to a .040 hitting percentage on the night.
WHAT HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS HAD TO SAY
"I thought after a pretty slow start, we were able to use our defense to really create some momentum. We made it really hard for them to score; they ended up only getting 22 kills, and they made 18 errors, so we really did a great job on defense. We doubled our kills versus theirs, so I think defense is what started it out for us as far as the catalyst for us playing great volleyball."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- Set number one began with a back-and-forth affair from both teams, with kills from Light and Breeze Czapinski leading the offense.
- But the Hornets held the advantage, using an early 5-0 run to find themselves up 15-8 halfway through the set.
- Kills from Light and Starr got the offense rolling, with the Aggies scoring six of the next eight to put them back within three.
- Back-to-back service aces from Bones put Davis back within one before back-to-back kills from Vanos tied things up at 20.
- After a quick point from Sac State, the Aggies used errors from their opponent to claim the first 25-21.
- In the second, both teams went blow-for-blow as they exchanged points to start the set.
- With the score tied at 10, the Davis offense began to heat up, with Czapinski sparking a quick 3-0 run.
- The Aggies continued to hold the three-point lead down the wire, with the attacking and blocking from Vanos bringing the score to 21-18 in favor of the road team.
- After a 3-0 run from the Hornets, Davis capitalized on four straight to take set two 25-21 and give them a 2-0 match lead.
- After a kill from Sac State gave them a 1-0 lead to begin the third, the Aggie offense began to roll, with aces from Cordero Barr and a kill from Demi Cole leading the way to an early 8-1 lead.
- Sacramento State looked to get things going, getting as close as five, but an Ally Chandler kill sparked another scoring run of 7-0 to go up 18-6.
- The Hornets got a couple more back, but Brooke Hibino and Vanos closed things out with three straight kills to give their team a 25-9 set win and the 3-0 sweep.
