The short story: Absolute lights out pitching from
Caroline Grimes and
Ashley Sawai, coupled with a UC Davis softball offensive explosion in the second game gave the Aggies a split of their Big West Conference opening doubleheader at CSU Bakersfield.
Â
LEADING OFF
- Grimes was nearly unhittable, going 6.2 innings giving up no runs until the final frame while striking out six batters
- Sawai was a force in the second game, throwing five no-hit shutout innings, striking out three while only allowing one base runner
- Mickey Buscemi slashed .500/.571/.833 over the two games, going 3-for-6 at the dish with two RBIs and two doubles, and she added a stolen base for good measure
- Grace Kilday flexed on the day, going 2-for-4 with three walks and two RBIs, she also hit a home run and slugged 1.250 over the two games
- Amanda Baldwin went a strong 2-for-3 in the second game, hitting her first career home run and knocking in a pair of runs
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME ONE)
- Both sides were held nearly hitless over the first six innings of the first game
- The Aggies did threaten in the fifth, but left a pair on base despite stolen bases from Bella Holtz and Buscemi
- In the seventh the Aggies got on the board for the first time in the game, when with the bases loaded Rylee Reeves was hit by a pitch to bring home Vanessa Calvillo to make it 1-0
- But in the bottom half of the seventh, after the Aggies could not build on the lead, Bakersfield scored a pair of runs to walk-off with a 2-1 win in the first game of the day's doubleheader
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME TWO)
- Things went a bit differently in the second game, and in the second inning the Aggies got things rolling quickly
- UC Davis exploded for seven runs on six hits in that second inning with the first big blow coming when Buscemi doubled up the middle to score a pair of Ags
- Next up was Gia Felice and she smashed a triple to right field that plated another pair of Aggies to make it 5-0
- Kilday then stepped into the box and not to long after that she crushed one to left field to score another pair of Aggies to make it 7-0 right at the start
- Sawai continued to lock in sitting down every batter she faced, except in the second, on her way to pitching another hitless gem
- In the fifth the Aggies got the two runs they needed to put the run rule in effect, and those runs came off the bat of Baldwin who smashed a two-run home run to make it 9-0
- In order the Roadrunners went in the fifth as Sawai and the Aggies finished off their 9-0 Big West victory and a spilt of the day's doubleheader
UP NEXT FOR THE AGGIES: UC Davis will look to secure an opening series win in Big West play when they play the rubber game against CSU Bakersfield, tomorrow at 1 p.m.
