UC Davis Claims Causeway Cup for 11th Straight Year

DAVIS, Calif. – For the 11th-straight year UC Davis athletics has claimed the Causeway Cup over Sacramento State, the Aggies 15th Cup in the 20 years the award has been decided.

While there are still points on the table, the Aggies have collected 41.6 of the 74.60 points to lock in the victory without having to consider the remaining competitions. So far out of 13 times UC Davis and Sacramento have met, the Aggies have won or bested the Hornets 10 times to give them 41.60 points while the Hornets can only claim 6.60 points.

"The Causeway Cup reflects the competitive spirit of UC Davis Athletics" states Director of Athletics Rocko DeLuca. "Winning this rivalry for the 11th straight year highlights the dedication of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, who take pride in representing Aggie Nation. The Causeway rivalry has long been a source of excitement for both schools, and we look forward to building on this tradition as our department continues to grow. This streak is a testament to our commitment to excellence across all sports, and we are proud to keep the Cup in Davis. Go Ags!"

UC Davis won the first nine meetings between the two schools, with victories or better finishes coming from women's soccer (W, 2-0); volleyball (W, 3-1); women's golf (finished higher); men's soccer (W, 4-2); women's basketball (W, 76-45); football (W, 42-39); men's tennis (W, 4-1) and gymnastics (W, 195.175). The Aggies added 2.5 more points with a win over the Hornets at the latest dual gymnastics meet.

The Ags and Hornets will meet nine more times to decide points over the next two months with three baseball games, beach volleyball facing off twice, both men's and women's golf facing off against the Hornets in tournament play, a meeting on the court in women's tennis and track & field's Causeway Classic.

Each of the schools' 18 common teams usually compete against each other at least once during the year. The winner is given the pre-determined amount of five points. If the two schools meet just once in a season, then all the points will go to the winning team. But if the teams play each other two or more times, the points are divided by how many meetings occur. For example, if the two softball teams play each other twice in the upcoming year, each meeting is worth 2.5 points.

The exceptions to this rule are cross country and track & field, sports for which it is common for a school to field a partial team. Furthermore, most track & field meets do not feature team scoring. Starting in 2013-14, the cross country points will be based on the NCAA West Regional. Track & field points are determined by the annual Causeway Dual meet.

Another exception to the rule, effective 2014-15, is in women's gymnastics. The two "home and home" meets shall be the only competitions that count toward the Causeway Cup. The NorCal Classic, the conference championships and any other neutral-site meeting will not appear on the standings. Effective 2018-19, beach volleyball will follow the same rules as gymnastics: only home-and-home, regular-season matches will count toward the Cup.
