Aggies Honor Seniors; Emerge Victorious Over Rainbow Wahine in Thrilling Finish

The short story: The UC Davis women's basketball team wrapped up their home schedule with a 74-66 victory over the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine on Saturday, Mar. 1.
 
OPENING TIP 
  • Four Ags hit double-digits on the afternoon, with Tova Sabel leading the way with 18 points.
  • Coming off the bench for the first time all season, Megan Norris finished the day with 16 points and six rebounds, also dishing out three assists.
  • The Aggie defense was strong throughout the game, forcing 16 turnovers with nine steals off their opponent.
  • Davis stayed proficient from the free throw line the entire contest, going 17-for-21 (81%) on the day, including a perfect 11-for-11 in the fourth quarter.
  • The game was a back-and-forth affair, featuring seven ties and 11 lead changes.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • With five minutes remaining in the first, the Aggies began to cut into the early 10-point deficit, starting with back-to-back threes from Nya Epps and Ryann Bennett.
  • The team ended the period on a 6-0 run, with a triple from Clara Glad putting them within two after the first ten minutes, 12-14.
  • In the second, Hawai'i built themselves back up to an eight-point lead before Davis grabbed a 10-0 scoring run to take their first lead of the afternoon on an Avery Sussex layup.
  • As both teams exchanged blows, the Rainbow Wahine blew the game open once again, ending the half with nine straight points to hold a 37-27 lead going into the locker room.
  • Coming out of the half, the third quarter was all Aggies early on, with the home team using great defense to march back into the contest, tying the game at 40 apiece.
  • Up 46-44 with one minute left in the period, Hawai'i retook the lead before Sussex snatched it right back for Davis with a three.
  • After Hawai'i split a pair of free throws, both teams entered the fourth tied at 49.
  • The Rainbow Wahine took another lead with a three to open the period, but Sabel scored four straight to give her team the advantage yet again.
  • In the final minute, after a layup brought Hawai'i back within one, another clutch three from Sabel gave the Aggies a two-possession lead, 66-62.
  • Hawai'i tried to stay alive by forcing Davis to the free throw line, but the Aggies would score their final eight points from the strike, proving to be the difference in the 74-66 victory.

UP NEXT: UC Davis will play its final two games of the regular season on the road, starting on Thursday, Mar. 6, against the UC Irvine Anteaters. The two-versus-three matchup in the Big West Conference will tip off at 6:00 p.m. PT on ESPN+ and KDVS 90.3.
