The short story: UC Davis volleyball has clinched a spot in the Big West Tournament for the third straight year following a three-set sweep of UC Irvine on Friday, Nov. 7.

FIRST SERVE
  • The Aggies were led offensively by double-digit killers Jade Light and Ally Chandler. Light led the way with 13 kills, and Chandler was close behind with 12 kills.
  • Light was also effective on the defensive side of the net, grabbing another double-double behind a season-high 20 digs.
  • Ximena Cordero Barr was the other Aggie with 10+ digs, getting 10 on the day. She also led the serving team with four service aces.
  • Mia Starr orchestrated the offense with 34 assists.
  • Allie Caldwell and Breeze Czapinski protected the net, each coming up with five total blocks to lead the team. Brooke Hibino was close behind with four total blocks.
WHAT HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS HAD TO SAY

"Great team effort today! We were locked in defensively. I thought we served tough, blocked well, and dug a lot of balls.  Proud of our team's one point at a time mentality as we worked back from deficits in the first and second set."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After getting the first three points of the match, Davis saw Irvine quickly climb back to tie the game at 12 apiece.
  • Back-to-back blocks and a kill from Hibino sparked both sides of the net for the Aggies, giving them a 20-16 lead.
  • But the Anteaters responded with a 4-0 run to tie it at 20.
  • After seeing the home team take its first lead at 22-21, kills from Starr, Chandler, and Light carried the Aggies the rest of the way, claiming set one 25-23.
  • UC Irvine responded with an offensive attack to start set two, going up 9-5 early.
  • After exchanging points, Davis got on a scoring run highlighted by two service aces from Cordero Barr to give them their first lead, 15-13.
  • The Anteaters tied things at 15, but defense carried another 5-0 run for the Aggies, putting them in the redzone.
  • Irvine refused to back down, scoring five of six to come within one, but Davis capped off the set with kills from Caldwell and Czapinski to win 25-22 and go up 2-0.
  • The Aggie attack rolled through set three, with aces from Light and Cordero Barr leading their team to an early 14-5 lead.
  • Davis got offensive contributions from Light, Chandler, and Starr down the stretch, as the team cruised to a 25-12 set three victory and their sixth conference sweep of the season.
UP NEXT: The road trip continues on Saturday, Nov. 8, as the Aggies continue their stay in Southern California when they take on Cal State Fullerton at 2:00 p.m. PT. The match will be live on ESPN+.
