The short story: UC Davis volleyball secured their first reverse sweep of the season on Thursday, Oct. 9, when it came back from down two sets to defeat UC San Diego.

FIRST SERVE
  • The Aggies' win streak continues, now winning their sixth straight match and moving to 5-0 in the Big West. This record marks the best-ever start that the team has had in conference play.
  • A balanced offensive attack featured four players reaching double-digit kills, including 16 from Jade Light, 14 from Breeze Czapinski, and 11 from both Ally Chandler and Brooke Hibino.
  • Mia Starr tied her season-high with 48 assists, just the third time this year she's had 45+ assists in a match.
  • Double-digit digs from Ximena Cordero Barr and Rachel Dunagan protected the backline for the Aggies. Cordero Barr racked up 24 digs while Dunagan had 14 to mark the fourth time she's hit double digits this season.
  • Allie Caldwell protected the net, tying a season-best seven total blocks.
  • Five service aces, including three straight in the second set, tie a career-high for Cordero Barr.
  • Coming off the bench in the third set, Czapinski went 14 for 22 for a team-best .455 hitting percentage.
WHAT HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS HAD TO SAY

"Super proud of the team. They showed character after losing those first two sets. We really dug in and played great defense all night, then we got our offense going in the last three, and that made the difference. Breeze came in and gave us a huge boost. Had 14 kills and hit .455, so she was definitely a difference maker tonight."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rattling off the first four points of the match, the Aggies saw their opponent fight back early, tying the first set at eight apiece.
  • Blocks from Caldwell and Faith Rabb-Patterson helped Davis maintain a three-point lead, but a 4-0 run from the Tritons gave them a 15-14 advantage halfway through.
  • Kills from Light led the offense down the stretch, but UCSD responded to each point, eventually claiming set one 25-21.
  • UC San Diego came out of the gate hot in the second, scoring the first five points.
  • The Aggies responded with a 5-0 run of their own.
  • This trend continued throughout the set, with both clubs exchanging scoring runs, with the road team eventually finding themselves up 22-20.
  • UC Davis looked to reclaim the lead, but UC San Diego would maintain to the end, taking the second 25-23 and holding a 2-0 lead.
  • Looking to avoid a sweep, the Aggies capped off a 4-0 run with a Cordero Barr service ace, leading 15-9 halfway through the third.
  • Kills from Chandler and Starr kept their team on the advantage, leading by as much as eight in the set.
  • Despite a 4-1 run from their opponent, UC Davis would cruise to a 25-17 set win, extending the match to a fourth set.
  • This dominant play from the Aggies would extend into the fourth set, with service and two aces from Dunagan giving the team an early 8-1 lead.
  • The Tritons looked to respond, getting as close as three, but three straight kills from Czapinski extended the lead to 20-11 for her team.
  • A duo block from Chandler and Starr would ice the set 25-15, setting both teams up for a decisive fifth set.
  • In the fifth, Chandler led with two early kills before her service set up Starr for the eighth point of the set, triggering a switch to the other side of the court.
  • Up 14-10 and looking to complete the comeback, the Aggies saw two points go to the opponent before Hibino took a ball from Starr to wrap things up for her team, giving them a 15-12 and 3-2 win.
UP NEXT: With a win from Long Beach State earlier tonight, it will be 5-0 vs. 5-0 in the University Credit Union Center on Saturday, Oct. 11, when the Aggies host the Beach to cap off their homestand. First serve will be at 11:00 a.m. PT.
