THE SHORT STORY: UC Davis put together a resilient defensive showing but came up just short in a 1-0 loss to UC San Diego on Thursday evening at Aggie Soccer Field. The Tritons netted the deciding goal in the 77th minute despite a six-save performance from
Cat Pieper and a determined second-half push from the Aggies.
PITCH SIDE
- Pieper anchored the Aggie defense with six saves while facing 13 total shots
- Ava Coverdale and Courtney Wagner led the UC Davis attack with two shots apiece, while Viet-Thy Tran added another as the Aggies generated opportunities throughout the second half
- Despite holding the Tritons scoreless through the first 75 minutes, UC Davis couldn't find the breakthrough on the offensive end, registering one shot on goal
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UC Davis set the tone early on defense, as Pieper denied UC San Diego's Lindsey Park in the fifth minute and later stopped a close-range effort from Lana Gilligan
- Coverdale and Wagner each created chances midway through the half, but the match went to halftime scoreless
- The second half opened with more key stops from Pieper, including saves in the 46th and 51st minutes to keep the Tritons off the board
- One of UC Davis' best chances came in the 65th minute when McKayla Farrell's run forced the Triton keeper off her line, allowing the Aggies to regain possession deep in the attacking third and earn a corner
- This allowed the Aggies to create some rhythm offensively in the 71st minute with back-to-back attempts from Coverdale and Tran, both narrowly missing the mark
- UC San Diego capitalized moments later when Talisa Lin found the net off a feed from Andrea Guillen in the 77th minute
- UC Davis kept pressing, with Wagner's late attempt in the 88th minute forcing a save, but the Tritons held on for the 1-0 win
