Hitchcock’s Sudden Death Overtime Goal Lifts Aggies To 3-0 Record In Conference Play

The short story: UC Davis men's water polo needed seven periods, but a sudden-death goal from Andrew Hitchcock led the team to a 3-0 start to Big West play over UC San Diego on Saturday, Oct. 25.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 45 seconds into the game, Thomas Kiesling opened things up for the Aggies.
  • A few minutes later, after a Triton response, Adam Ting got on the board for his team as they ended the period down 2-3.
  • Thomas Marr tied things up, and Oriol Viñas took the lead for the Ags to open the second quarter.
  • A minute later, UCSD got a penalty shot goal to knot things up at four apiece.
  • But Gabe Bensen took a power-play shot into the net for his first of the day.
  • With just 17 seconds left in the half, a power-play goal from the Tritons tied the game at five.
  • A 3-1 third quarter from the Aggies was led by scores from Mateo Ruano, William Fosselman, and Timothy Kerr, giving their team an 8-6 lead going into the final period.
  • The first from Brody Crouch and the second from Kerr gave UC Davis a four-goal lead with only three minutes left in regulation.
  • But the UC San Diego offense got hot, with four goals from three different players tying the game at 10, sending it into overtime.
  • After two three-minute overtime periods, the game was sent into a sudden-death scenario, with the next score giving the win.
  • 80 seconds into the sudden death period, Andrew Hitchcock was set up for the golden goal, ending the seven-period marathon and giving his team an 11-10 win.
UP NEXT: The Aggies stay south when they take on the number one-ranked NJCAA team, Golden West, on Sunday, Oct. 26. The game is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. PT.
