The short story: UC Davis volleyball claimed its eighth straight victory of the season in a three-set sweep of Cal State Bakersfield on Friday, Oct. 17.

FIRST SERVE
  • Leading the way on the offense was Jade Light with 14 kills and four service aces.
  • Breeze Czapinski also reached double-digit kills for the fourth straight match with 10 kills. She also contributed defensively with four total blocks.
  • Mia Starr orchestrated the offense with a team-high 27 assists.
  • Ally Chandler and Allie Caldwell bolstered the net. Chandler led the way with six total blocks, and Caldwell was close behind with five total blocks.
  • Ximena Cordero Barr protected the back line with 11 digs. Starr was close behind with nine digs.
  • Overall, the Aggie defense held the Roadrunners to a hitting percentage of .086, just the second time this season the team has held a team under .100 in hitting percentage. They also didn't allow a single Roadrunner to hit double-digit kills.
WHAT HEAD COACH DAN CONNERS HAD TO SAY

"Offensively, the team did a great job attacking aggressively throughout the match. Mia kept the offense very balanced, which gave us different opportunities to take advantage of. After a slow start defensively, we picked it up in sets two and three, and it became very difficult to score against us. We were also able to keep them off balance with very tough serving today."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With Bakersfield up 7-4 early in the first, Davis got the offense rolling with kills from Brooke Hibino and Czapinski.
  • Up 12-10, back-to-back 4-0 runs from the Aggies put them up big, 20-12.
  • But the Roadrunners responded with scoring runs of their own, getting back within four.
  • Late in the set, two straight kills from Czapinski made the difference for a 25-19 set one win for Davis.
  • The Aggies started the second set hot, scoring six of the first seven points and cruising to a 15-8 lead halfway through.
  • With Bakersfield trying to gain momentum, back-to-back service aces from Haden Bones and three straight aces from Light shut the gate for the Roadrunners, with the road team winning 25-12 and taking a 2-0 lead.
  • Set number three started similarly to the second, as Davis would score seven of the frame's first nine points, including a 10-1 run, to start up 10-3.
  • After a 4-0 run from Cal State Bakersfield halfway through the set put them back within five, three straight blocks from Caldwell led the way for a 7-0 run to put her team on the brink of victory.
  • With the Roadrunners tacking on a couple of points, Chandler put the match on ice with her eighth kill to give her team the 25-14 win and three-set sweep.
UP NEXT: Davis wraps up their road trip on Saturday, Oct. 18, when the team travels down to Northridge to take on CSUN. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. PT.
