Aggies Win Streak Comes to an End in Road Matchup with the Beach

Score: UC Davis 60, Long Beach State 73
Location: Long Beach, Calif. (Walter Pyramid)
Records: UC Davis 11-5 (5-1), Long Beach State 9-5 (5-0)

The short story: Mazatlan Harris led the Aggies with 13 points, but the UC Davis women's basketball team suffered their first conference loss in a Saturday afternoon matchup against Long Beach State University.

OPENING TIP
  • Harris led the way for her club, scoring a team-high 13 points and seven rebounds while playing 36 minutes.
  • Freshman Ryann Bennett also hit double-figures with 11 points, playing collegiately in her hometown for the first time.
  • The Aggies went to the line early and often, going 18-for-24 from the stripe (75%)
  • Davis was able to create plenty of second-chance opportunities with 13 offensive rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Beach opened with the game's first six points, Sydney Burns cashed in a three.
  • Down by 10 late in the first, Mazatlan Harris poured in back-to-back three-pointers to help push the Aggies within four.
  • After exchanging layups with their opponent, Tova Sabel's free throw ended the quarter with her team down 19-22.
  • Both teams struggled to score in the second, with no points being scored in the first two minutes.
  • Despite a layup from Bria Shine and a free throw from Avery Sussex, Davis went into halftime down 22-35.
  • Coming into the third, the Aggies looked to fight back, with Megan Norris scoring six of the team's first eight in the quarter.
  • But Long Beach State refused to back down, matching their opponent's momentum to enter the final quarter at 54-36.
  • The Aggies went to the line often to open the fourth quarter, cashing in on five of six before a pair of threes from Ryann Bennett put her team back within 10.
  • However, the Beach began to pull away once again with three-pointers of their own.
  • Bennett scored the game's final four points, but it was too late as her team would suffer their first conference loss 60-73.

UP NEXT: The Aggies will return home for their second matchup of the season against the Cal Poly Mustangs on Thursday, Jan. 16. It will be the teams International Day game and will tipoff at 6:00 p.m. PT in the University Credit Union Center.
