LA JOLLA, Calif. — UC Davis opened the 2024 Triton Invitational with an overtime win over No. 13 Long Beach State, 8-7, before dropping the final three games of the weekend to No. 4 Hawai'i, No. 14 Arizona State and No. 6 UC Irvine.
Grace Pelkey led the way for the Aggies in their win over The Beach, netting three goals, including two in overtime.
Chelsea Johnson found her teammates with consistency, racking up four assists, while Nellie McAdams had a monster game in the goal, logging 20 saves, three steals and allowing just seven goals on 35 shot attempts.
In game two, UC Davis jumped out to an early 3-1 lead over the Rainbow Wahine, and took a 5-6 score into the halftime break.
Kelly Hungerford had three first half assists, while Gianna Nocetti had two first half goals.
Hawai'i took over in the second half, outscoring the Aggies by four goals to win the game 14-9.
Arizona State led wire-to-wire in game three, building a 3-1 halftime lead and leveraging a 4-1 fourth quarter advantage to move past UC Davis.
Johnson had another strong performance, scoring a goal and dishing out two assists. Pelkey was a defensive difference maker, turning in six steals and two field blocks.
The Aggies built an early 2-1 lead against the Anteaters in the final game of the weekend with Pelkey tossing in both goals.
Irvine stormed back in the second to take a one goal lead into the half before expanding their advantage to four goals with a big third quarter.
UC Davis pumped in four fourth quarter goals, but UC Irvine took the seventh place game 11-8.
Pelkey finished the game with four goals and three steals, while Sam Yoo tallied two scores. Johnson was the Aggies' leading passer with three assists.
The Aggies play their first home games of the season next weekend when they host the Aggie Invite at Schaal Aquatics Center.
