Aggies Make Trip to First-Place Hawai'i

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis will look to make it three straight victories when it enters the arena of first-place Hawai'i on Thursday night.

The Aggies (15-12, 11-6 Big West) defeated the reigning Big West Tournament Champions when the two teams met in Davis, 61-51. With conference tournament seeding still to be decided, this game will likely have title implications as the two squads come down the stretch. This will be the final true road contest of the season for UC Davis.

LAST WEEK
Despite a late scare from last-place CSUN, UC Davis came up with a couple huge stops in the final minute to grab a 58-54 over the Matadors. Evanne Turner delivered a huge performance, matching her season-high with 23 points in a 9-for-19 showing. Megan Norris finished just one rebound shy of a double-double as the center totaled 10 points and collected nine boards on the night.

The Aggies delivered a much better performance on the weekend, handing Cal State Bakersfield 78-62 in a game that was never in doubt. UC Davis enjoyed one of its best shooting days of the season, shooting 44.4% from beyond the arc.

ABOUT THE RAINBOW WAHINE
Hawai'i remains at the top of the Big West standings after grabbing three straight victories following its last defeat, coming at the hands of the Aggies. The Rainbow Wahine are undefeated in Big West games played inside the Stan Sheriff Center.

Daejah Phillips is the team's leading (11.0 ppg) and earned Big West Player of the Week honors after leading her team past Long Beach State last week.

SERIES NOTES
UC Davis won last season's contest on the island and lead the all-time series 16-12. The series is tied 7-7 in Hawai'i.

TURNER REACHES 1,500 CAREER POINTS
Evanne Turner ascended to fourth on the UC Davis all-time scoring list, passing both Jessica Campbell and Staci Stevens. The Fontana native has 1,552 points for her career and will look to further climb the ranks as third-place Sydnee Fipps is in her sights with 1,636 career points. Turner is one of four players in UC Davis women's basketball history to reach the 1,500-point milestone.

PRESEASON POLL
The UC Davis women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the league standings, and received three first-place votes according to a vote by the league's coaches.

Coming off of their impressive 2022-23 seasons, Evanne Turner and Tova Sabel were selected to the Big West Preseason Coaches' Team.

BAUGH JOINS COACHING STAFF
Former WNBA player and Sacramento native, Vicki Baugh, joins Jennifer Gross' staff as an assistant coach. The Sacramento native was a standout for the University of Tennessee, reaching the NCAA Tournament in all four of her playing seasons with the Lady Volunteers.

She won a national championship with the squad in the 2007-08 season before battling injuries for the next two years. Baugh battled back to enjoy an excellent end to her collegiate career, leading her team to back-to-back SEC titles and Elite Eight finishes in the NCAA Tournament. In her senior season, Baugh capped off her career in the college ranks by leading the Lady Vols in shooting percentage.

HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE
The Aggies are now 84-17 on their home floor over the past five-plus years, winning 38 of their last 47 and posting a winning record at home in each of the last nine campaigns.

SVANHOLM RETURNS FOR SENIOR SEASON
Truly embodying the essence of the student-athlete is Lena Svanholm of UC Davis women's basketball. The forward has excelled tremendously off the court, as she was recently accepted into UC Davis' Ph.D program for Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Svanholm has announced that she will return for her 'last dance' in the 2023-24 campaign, becoming the only known active NCAA Division I women's basketball student-athlete to be enrolled in such a program.
