BERKELEY, Calif. -- UC Davis got an excellent outing from Kenedi Brown against No. 24 California, but the nationally-ranked Golden Bears escaped with the 1-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon.
After earning Big West Pitcher of the Week honors, Brown continued her dominant stretch in the circle despite taking the tough-luck loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on five hits, allowing no walks and striking out eight. Brown has allowed just one earned run in her last 19 innings of work. Cal's Haylei Archer won the pitcher's duel after an impressive outing of her own, tossing a two-hit shutout while punching out six Aggies.
UC Davis just couldn't seem to get the bats going, recording just two hits in the contest. The Aggies only advanced one runner to third base, going a total of 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Leah Polson and Sarah Nakahara registered the two hits on the day. The two outfielders went 1-for-3 respectively on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The hosts took an early lead in the bottom of the first, but Brown did well to minimize the damage, fanning a batter for the third out to strand two runners in scoring position.
Brown maneuvered her way out of another jam in the third inning when she worked around a leadoff single to keep it a one-run ballgame after three.
Polson finally broke up the no-hitter when she slapped a base hit to left in the top of the sixth. The Aggies nearly leveled the contest in their last turn at the plate when Nakahara led off the inning with a sharp line drive up the middle. The outfielder swiped second base and trotted into third base after a wild pitch.
However, the tying run came up 60 feet short as Archer was able to record the final two outs to extend her team's win streak to 14 games.
