SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- UC Davis took an early lead in the opening game of the Capital Classic, but BYU rallied late to snatch the 5-3 victory on Thursday morning at Shea Stadium.
Caroline Grimes delivered a solid start, tossing four straight scoreless innings before running into some trouble in the fifth. She surrendered four earned runs on six hits while striking out two before handing the ball off to Ashley Sawai to start the six. The freshman allowed one run over two frames, punching out three Cougars.
Anna Dethlefson led the way offensively for the Aggies, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a triple and a walk. Leah Polson picked up a knock, going 1-for-4 with an RBI while Grace Kilday also contributed, going 1-for-3 for UC Davis with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sarah Starks came around to score the first run of the ballgame after drawing a leadoff walk to start the second inning. Sarah Nakahara smacked a single to left before Kilday plated Starks with her base hit up the middle, giving her team a 1-0 advantage.
The Aggies tacked on another run in the third when Polson's knock to left field scored Dethlefson to double the lead.
Grimes cruised through four frames until BYU used two hits and a sacrifice fly to push four runs across in the fifth, jumping out in front with a 4-2 lead.
UC Davis had one last comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh Dethlefson provided some fireworks with a triple off the left field wall, eventually coming around to score on an error to bring her team within two. However, the Aggies would come up short, falling 5-3.
GAME NOTES
» UC Davis pitchers faced 34 BYU hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out five.
» The Aggies drew five walks from BYU pitching.
» Dethlefson led the Aggies at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple.
» BYU was led offensively by senior Violet Zavodnik, who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
» Junior Alyssa Aguilar led the Cougars pitching staff, throwing 3.1 innings of one-run ball.
UP NEXT
This afternoon's scheduled game between UC Davis and Sacramento State has been cancelled and the teams will look to make up the game at a later date. The Ags continued the Capital Classic tomorrow when they return to the friendly confines of La Rue Field to host Utah State. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
