DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis enjoyed one of its best shooting days of the season, shooting 44.4% from beyond the arc in a 78-62 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon inside the University Credit Union Center
The Aggies (15-12, 11-6 Big West) had four players score in double figures, led by Mazatlan Harris, who went for a season-high 15 points after netting three shots from deep while pulling down seven boards.
After a tough shooting night in Thursday's contest, Tova Sabel bounced back in a big way in her 15-point showing. The guard also grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists. Evanne Turner nailed three triples in the opening period and completed her day with 13 points, five assists, and five rebounds.
Megan Norris made it back-to-back games in double-digits, scoring 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting.
Overall, UC Davis moved the ball extremely well and found a multitude of open looks on the offensive end, posting its second-best team field goal percentage of the year at 55.3% on 19 total assists.
The Aggie defense remained very tough, holding Cal State Bakersfield shooters to just 36.4% from the field. The Roadrunners did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end as UC Davis dominated the boards, out-rebounding their opponent 38-20.
How It Happened
UC Davis exploded for an 11-0 run within the first three minutes of the game. Turner caught fire from three-point range in the first period, hitting three triples to give herself nine early points and extending her team's lead to double digits. The Aggies were feeling it from long range, hitting seven threes (7-of-10) in the opening 10 minutes of the ball game to take a 25-14 lead after one.
UC Davis kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 7:11 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 30-16. The Aggies got a huge boost heading into the locker room when Campbell Gray knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer, her first three-ball of the season, to give her team a 42-26 advantage at the break.
Davis' team preserved its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Harris, to expand its lead further to 55-40 with 4:35 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Roadrunners mustered a short run, but the Aggies still entered the fourth quarter with a 55-44 edge. UC Davis knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 13 total points.
UC Davis kept widening that lead, expanding it to 66-52 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 72-52 with 2:51 to go in the contest. The Roadrunners narrowed the margin yet again, but the Aggies still cruised the rest of the way for the 78-62 win.
