Aggies Fall to Cal 11-5

DAVIS, Calif. — The UC Davis women's water polo team fell 11-5 to No. 5 Cal in their first non-tournament game of the season. This is the Aggies (2-12) third loss to Cal this season and their eighth loss to a top-ten ranked opponent.

Ally Smith led UC Davis in scoring, notching two goals on two shot attempts. Other Aggie scorers were Maddie Sumner, Tess Fundter and Grace Pelkey.

The Golden Bears came out aggressive from the opening sprint and dominated the first quarter, 4-0. Fundter and Sumner found the back of the net in the second quarter, but the Aggies found themselves behind 8-2 at halftime.

Cal continued to expand their lead in the third quarter, scoring three times to the Aggies' one as Pelkey scored her 18th goal of the season.

Smith put in both her scores in the fourth quarter as the Aggies silenced the visiting offense, but it was too late to mount a full comeback.

The Aggies are back on the road next weekend to participate in the Harvard Tournament in Cambridge, Mass. UC Davis will play the hosts, Harvard, as well as Brown, Siena College, and La Salle. Their first game of the weekend will be Feb. 24 at 10:30 a.m.
