Aggies Head South to Take on Long Beach State; UC Riverside

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis will head to Southern California for a pair of Big West contests at Long Beach State and UC Riverside.

After picking up an important win over first-place Hawai'i, The Aggies (13-10, 9-4 Big West) sit just a game outside of the top spot with seven games left in the regular season. Following this weekend's action, UC Davis will play four of its next five games inside the University Credit Union Center. This weekend will prove to be extremely important in the title race as Jennifer Gross' hopes to gain some momentum heading into the business end of the season.

LAST WEEK
Points were hard to come by for three quarters, but an explosive final 10 minutes allowed UC Davis to pick up a comfortable 61-48 win at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night.
The Aggies had three players score in double figures, led by Tova Sabel, who had 17 points and seven rebounds. Evanne Turner tacked on 14 points and Sydney Burns chipped in as well with 10 points and three steals.

UC Davis staged a remarkable comeback to defeat the reigning Big West Champions, downing the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine 61-51 at the University Credit Union Center Saturday.
The Aggies trailed by 10 points midway through the third quarter, but rallied behind a balanced scoring attack and a stifling defense in the second half to secure the win.

ABOUT THE BEACH
After finishing 17-3 in conference play to earn the No. 2 seed at the Big West Tournament a season ago, Long Beach State has been unable to sustain that success under new head coach Amy Wright. The Beach come into this week with an overall record of 8-14 and just 3-9 in Big West action.

LBSU lost its Big West Coach of the Year (Jeff Cammon) and Big West Player of the Year (Tori Harris) and have certainly felt the effects on the defensive end. The Beach were the conference's second best defense (57.4 ppg) last season and have dropped to 10th (69.5 ppg) in 2023-24.

ABOUT THE HIGHLANDERS
UC Riverside has had a very interesting 2023-24 Big West campaign, picking up wins over title contenders Cal Poly and Hawai'i, but suffering losses to ninth-place Long Beach State and seventh-place UC San Diego at home.

The Highlanders come into this weekend with a conference record of 7-6 and will look to the Big West's leading scorer, Jordan Webster (17.8 ppg), to carry the team to victory.

SERIES NOTES
The Aggies hold a narrow 23-21 advantage over Long Beach State in the all-time series. In the last meeting, UC Davis defeated The Beach on their senior day to knock them down to the No. 2 seed in the last game of the regular season.

Davis' team has been historically dominant against UC Riverside, leading the all-time series 42-26. However, the Highlanders hold a 15-14 advantage in games inside the SRC Arena.

TURNER REACHES 1,500 CAREER POINTS
Evanne Turner ascended to fourth on the UC Davis all-time scoring list, passing both Jessica Campbell and Staci Stevens. The Fontana native has 1,506 points for her career and will look to further climb the ranks as third-place Sydnee Fipps is in her sights with 1,636 career points. Turner is one of four players in UC Davis women's basketball history to reach the 1,500-point milestone.

PRESEASON POLL
The UC Davis women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the league standings, and received three first-place votes according to a vote by the league's coaches.

Coming off of their impressive 2022-23 seasons, Evanne Turner and Tova Sabel were selected to the Big West Preseason Coaches' Team.

BAUGH JOINS COACHING STAFF
Former WNBA player and Sacramento native, Vicki Baugh, joins Jennifer Gross' staff as an assistant coach. The Sacramento native was a standout for the University of Tennessee, reaching the NCAA Tournament in all four of her playing seasons with the Lady Volunteers.

She won a national championship with the squad in the 2007-08 season before battling injuries for the next two years. Baugh battled back to enjoy an excellent end to her collegiate career, leading her team to back-to-back SEC titles and Elite Eight finishes in the NCAA Tournament. In her senior season, Baugh capped off her career in the college ranks by leading the Lady Vols in shooting percentage.

HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE
The Aggies are now 82-17 on their home floor over the past five-plus years, winning 36 of their last 45 and posting a winning record at home in each of the last nine campaigns.

SVANHOLM RETURNS FOR SENIOR SEASON
Truly embodying the essence of the student-athlete is Lena Svanholm of UC Davis women's basketball. The forward has excelled tremendously off the court, as she was recently accepted into UC Davis' Ph.D program for Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Svanholm has announced that she will return for her 'last dance' in the 2023-24 campaign, becoming the only known active NCAA Division I women's basketball student-athlete to be enrolled in such a program.
