WHAT HEAD COACH JENNIFER GROSS HAD TO SAY
"I really feel like our team was ready to battle today, and we knew that's what it would take. It was a real disciplined and focused effort for 40 minutes and I'm proud of the way we competed today. I am disappointed that we didn't get it done, but there is a lot to build on."
Â
"The thing about Mazzie [Harris] is that she is just solid and does the right thing. She is locked in and one of our best defenders each night, and I'm proud of how she has stayed true to who she is but has added a little more each year. I'm happy on her performance tonight."
Â
"We've got another challenging test on the road against a good Montana State team. But hopefully this will give us the confidence that we can play with anybody and that when we are at our best and come with the right focus, we can play with anyone."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- While Stanford looked to build a lead early, the Aggies showed out of the gate that they had come to play, making sure that the biggest lead Stanford could grab was only six points in the first five minutes of the game
- Back-and-forth it went, with Harris nailing a three with 1:32 in the period to make it 12-11 Stanford
- But buckets from Stanford down the final minute, meant the Cardinal had built out its six-point lead again with a 17-11 first quarter lead
- Late in the second quarter the Cardinal fought to pull away, taking an 11-point lead with 52 seconds to go in the half
- Down the floor came the Aggies and on an assist from senior Tova Sabel, Harris nailed a three-point basket to cut the Stanford lead to under 10 points and a defensive stop on the other end meant that Stanford only took a 29-21 lead into the break
- Midway through the third quarter the Aggies begun to cut into the lead and over the final five minutes of the period made a run at the Cardinal
- Sable answered a Stanford three with her own three at the one-minute mark of the quarter to make it 45-46
- On the next possession, Sable drew a foul and after making both free throws the Aggies had taken a 47-46 lead with 25 seconds to go in the quarter
- But the Cardinal, with five seconds left, got a look in the corner and hit a three the buzzer rang to retake the lead, 49-47 heading into the final period
- Stanford used a 20-point fourth quarter, outscoring the Aggies by 11 points in the final period to pull away and lock up a 69-56 win
UP NEXT: The Aggies remain on the road, heading to Montana State on Nov. 17. They next return to Davis on Nov. 20 when they play host to Sacramento State.
