Aggies Shatter Records en Route to Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational Title

Coeur d'Alene, ID — History was made as UC Davis women's golf secured the victory at the sixth annual Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational, posting the third-lowest 54-hole total in the tournament's history. Four Aggies placed in the top 20 while Vani Karimanal fired a round-three low of 66 to help lead UC Davis to their first win of 2023, and first since the 2020-21 season.

DAY THREE
This is the first win of Demi Runas' career, and her team performed in dominating fashion all week.

Winning in convincing fashion, the Aggies were firing on all cylinders as a team, with four Aggies placing in the top 20.

Abby Leighton showed exactly why she is a former All-Big West Conference selection, leading UC Davis with a third-place finish. Carding a 70 today, Leighton put on a clinic. Throughout the whole tournament, Leighton recorded 13 birdies, and was a key reason the Aggies ranked first in every team scoring stat, having the lowest average score on each different type of par.

Vani Karimanal ended up finishing tied for 25th but was electric today, firing a round-three low of 66 and just one stroke shy of a UC Davis program record. Playing from the number one position, Karimanal had everything going her way today, sinking five birdies, with one of those going for a chip-in. Karimanal has gotten off to a brilliant start to her young career.

Lauren Calderon and Elle Rastvortseva finished the tournament tied for 7th with impressive 54-hole totals of 213. Calderon like the entire Aggie lineup limited their mistakes throughout the course of the week, only carding three bogeys while gaining those strokes back with three birdies today to cap off a career-best finish and her first placement among the top 10.

Rastvortseva put together her second-best standing of her career this week as well. Starting off strong with a pair of 70's in round one and two, she concluded the weekend with a 73. After a run of four straight bogeys, she turned it around to rattle off two birdies on the back-nine and while carding pars the rest of the way.

Skyler May was the final Aggie part of the top 20, finishing tied for 16th. After carding a 73 on day one, May continued to improve each of the following rounds, finishing with a 71 today, good for even-par.

In Coach Runas' first-ever tournament win, the Aggies set the program-low team total for a 54-hole tournament at 845, shattering the past record of 856 strokes. The Aggies also had the second-best ever team-total single-round score today, falling just one stroke short of the program record of 277, set all the way back in 2011.

Coach Runas and the Aggies will look to carry this momentum next time out as UC Davis heads to New Mexico starting October 9, for the New Mexico State Golf Iconic Classic.

DAY TWO
UC Davis continues to shine with their consistency throughout the entire lineup. Their performance in the second round was nothing short of exceptional, posting a combined score of 279 strokes, a team-low score during round two of play. This incredible showing brings their two-round total to just 567 strokes, securely positioning them at the top of the leaderboard, with second-placed Seattle trailing by two strokes.

The second round saw some standout individual performances from Abby Leighton and Elle Rastvortseva who yet again showcased their prowess by both finishing tied for fourth place, each with a total score of 140 strokes. Their consistent play has undoubtedly been instrumental in UC Davis' commanding lead. Leighton carded six birdies while Rastvortseva had four on her scorecard as she continues to excel on par 4s.

Lauren Calderon contributed to her team's impressive performance, posting a two-under-par, 69 to bring her total up to just 142 strokes after three rounds. Her two-under performance was tied for the third-best score among players during round two.

With a round of 72, Skyler May sits at T15 with a total score of 145 strokes. Her mistake-free golf during the first two rounds of play has her quietly climbing the leaderboards, after jumping up five spots today.

Vani Karimanal from the number one position, continues to contribute to her team's efforts, finishing T48 with a total score of 153 strokes.

DAY ONE
Behind the one-under-par effort from Elle Rastvortseva, the UC Davis women's golf team is at four-over-par as a team, ranking third in the competitive field of 13 teams.

The entire lineup for the Aggies was dialed in today as UC Davis is only four strokes behind the leaders Gonzaga and just one stroke behind second-place San Francisco.

Abby Leighton, carded an even-par, 72 along with Rastvortseva to lead the Aggies.

The rest of the lineup for UC Davis saw amazing performances from Skyler May (+1), Lauren Calderon (+1) and Vani Karimanal (+5). On the individual side of things, Katelyn Parr carded a six-over-par, 78.

As a team, the Aggies turned in 17 birdies with Leighton and Rastvortseva each having a team-high four on the day.
