DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis was dominant from start-to-finish in its 3-0 win over San Jose State, earning its first home victory of the season at Aggie Soccer Field.
Two first-half goals gave the Aggies an early advantage before a second-half goal confirmed the result, cruising to its first win since Aug. 27 when they picked up a 2-1 victory over Ohio State.
Ethan Hoard stepped into a defensive role, pairing with fellow center back
Luke Goodman to anchor a defense that did not allow a single shot on target. Full backs
Sean Bilter and
Cole Pond were excellent with their defensive duties but also got involved in the attack, playing a crucial role in each of the first two goals.
Bilter was the one who nearly opened the scoring in the 4
th minute when his headed attempt from a corner struck the crossbar. Just a few minutes later,
Cason Goodman broke the deadlock when Pond delivered a perfectly-weighted ball down the channel to the feet
Ryan Dieter. The Santa Rosa native squared a pass across to C. Goodman who tapped in from close range to give his team the early lead, netting his fifth goal of the season.
The Aggies doubled their advantage just before the 10-minute mark when Bilter whipped in a wonderful cross to C. Goodman, who did extremely well to flick the ball on to
Ian Ngonethong. The freshman was free on the back post and poked his shot home to score his first collegiate goal.
The home side continued to dominate possession and eventually worked another great scoring chance in the 64
th minute when
Zack Lillington unlocked the San Jose State defense with a terrific ball to Dieter, who cut onto his right foot before curling his shot into the side netting to wrap things up. This was Dieter's first goal of the season.
Some more solid defending the rest of the way got UC Davis across the finish line, improving its record to 3-3-2 heading into Big West Conference action next week.
