Davis, Calif. — The UC Davis field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking loss at home to the Richmond Spiders, falling 2-1 in the final non-conference game of the season.
UC Davis got off to a blazing start, taking an early 1-0 lead in the 6th minute after a Zoe Mohrman goal.
The goal was Mohrman's first of her career. The stalwart defender blasted one from the top of the circle off a penalty corner after being inserted from Shannon Lackey and set up by Ella Franken.
Taking a large portion of their shots in the early going, UC Davis recorded five of their 11 attempts in the first period, playing with a good sense of pace and urgency.
In the second, this would flip, with Richmond being the initiators of offense, recording six shots to the Aggies, zero. Even with the game script taking a shift, UC Davis' backline and goalkeeper Sarah Lopez stymied all the Spider's chances, keeping the game at 1-0 heading into the final 30 minutes.
Resisting the Spider's counter-attack in the first period, it wouldn't hold for much longer as Richmond secured their first goal of the game during the 42nd minute.
The second and third periods were characterized by Richmond's ability to create penalty corners, as the Spiders had six during the span making it hard for the Aggie offense to get back into their rhythm.
With it knotted at 1-1, a few minutes would pass by before the Spiders took the lead for good, scoring the eventual game-winning goal off a penalty corner during the 51st minute to take a 2-1 lead.
The Aggies would try and mount up the energy to get the equalizer late, even going with an empty net for the final two minutes, but were unable to find the success they had early on.
