Aggies Down Ohio State 2-1 to Conclude Perfect Opening Weekend

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was a special night in Columbus for UC Davis as the Aggies delivered an incredible performance to take down Ohio State on their own turf, earning the 2-1 victory behind goals from Tristan Wouters and Cason Goodman.

Charles Janssen was likely the man of the match after his sparkling display between the posts. His six saves were vital in the effort to maintain the lead, flashing a couple tremendous saves in the closing minutes to keep the hosts at bay. The redshirt junior unbelievably provided an assist for the game-winning goal, launching a beautiful goal kick to spark an attack.

Wouters netted his first collegiate goal as the freshman winger wreaked havoc in the final third. Bagging his second goal of the weekend was C. Goodman, who ultimately scored the winning goal in the contest. Ryan Dieter's pace and dribbling ability were on full display as the senior made a huge impact in the attack, notching his second assist of the year.

UC Davis was the only team at the 2023 Wolstein Classic to post a perfect 2-0 record. Ethan Hoard, Sean Bilter, Charles Janssen, and Cason Goodman were named to the All-Tournament Team following the competition.

It was an extremely lively start to the contest as both sides scored within the first five minutes. Ohio State sparked a quick counterattack down the left flank just 90 seconds into the match and an attempt from shot range forced Janssen to make a terrific reaction save, but striker Tanner Creech would finish off the rebound to give his team the early advantage.

However, the Aggies would deliver the perfect response when C. Goodman did very well to win the ball off a Buckeye defender before lobbing a pass into Dieter, who was making an excellent run into the box. The Santa Rosa native clipped the ball to the edge of the six-yard box to find Wouters who nodded down the equalizing goal.

It got even better for UC Davis in the 26th minute when C. Goodman found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper following a wonderful goal kick from Janssen, and he made no mistake, tucking his shot into the bottom corner to put his team out in front.

The hosts searched frantically for the equalizer in the closing stages, desperately throwing players forward to create chances. In the 81st minute, Ohio State nearly found that elusive goal following a corner that resulted in a point-blank header that was denied by another spectacular Janssen save. This would prove to be the last scoring opportunity of the match as the Aggies held strong defensively to preserve the 2-1 scoreline at the final whistle.

Today's win marks the program's first win over a Power 5 team since 2019 when UC Davis defeated Wisconsin.
