UC Davis Picks Up Huge Upset Win on Senior Day

Box Score DAVIS, Calif. — UC Davis (10-5, 3-0 Big West) stunned Big West powerhouse UC Santa Barbara (17-3, 2-1), 4-3, on Senior Day at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.

The Gauchos entered the contest ranked 32nd in the nation, and featured a nationally ranked singles player, #117 Pablo Masjuan, and the 67th ranked doubles pairing of Kai Brady and Philip Jordan.

The win, Davis' sixth in its last seven matches, propels the Aggies into a tie with UC Irvine at the top of the Big West standings.

Aggie seniors are: Brett Brinkman, Mitchell Davis, Coleton Hootman, Andras Necz, and Andrei Volgin.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Hootman and Lucas Bollinger opened up doubles play with a 6-2 set win before UC Santa Barbara's ranked duo won their set to even things out. The deciding set, played out on court two, went into a tiebreaker set that Brinkman and Necz won 7-3, giving the Aggies the first point of the match.

Singles competition was hotly contested, with two matches going into a tiebreaker set, and all but one match going to a third set.

After Santa Barbara quickly tied the competition at 1 apiece, Brinkman responded with a come-from-behind three set victory. Ryan Torres followed suit, putting the Aggies one point away from completing the upset.

The visitors refused to make that an easy task, as Brady and Jordan each earned their second wins of the day, defeating Bollinger and Volgin.

With the match tied 3-3, all eyes turned to the showdown on court two, where Aggie freshman Constantinos Djakouris was squaring off with Masjuan, the Gaucho star with a 14-1 season record.

Djakouris opened up the match with a 6-3 first set win, but Masjuan countered, 6-4, in the second set. Set three was back-and-forth, until a 6-6 score required a tiebreaking final set that Djakouris gutted out, 7-5.

UP NEXT
UC Davis will aim to stay hot against the University of Hawai'i, who come to town for a Wednesday morning match. The Rainbow Warriors (9-6, 2-1 Big West) are fourth in the Big West standings and have won three of their last four. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
