Born To Jump; The Tale of Kylee Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - Coming out of high school, Kylee Davis was a decorated long jumper, jumping a mark of 20-4.5. Being the No. 1-ranked long jumper in California, Kylee had numerous colleges looking to offer her.

"It was a stressful process as my performance determined which college I would ultimately end up at," Kylee said.

Kylee had chosen the University of California, Davis over her other offers, due to the fact that her mother was an UC Davis Alumni and the college was close to home.

"The biggest reason I chose Davis was because of Coach Makusha and his legacy," Kylee stated. "I knew Makusha had the tools and experience to help me take the next big step towards the Olympics."

Kylee spent all of summer, fall, and winter quarter training to become a prestigious long jumper at UC Davis. Putting in countless hours of work to perfect her craft.

Kylee expressed that, "Training up until the first meet was intense but also rewarding as I love the long training sessions which would help clear my mind."

Over the months, Kylee improved her form and approach in long jump, becoming a threat in the Big West Conference.

Kylee claimed that, "I felt that I had done everything in my will to be ready for my first collegiate track meet."

Kylee had a standout performance in her first ever collegiate track meet as her long jump mark of 19-2.5 placed her No. 2 all time on the UC Davis indoor list. She also ran a blistering 7.76 seconds in the 60m dash, winning her heat.

"To me that jump did not feel like I accomplished much as it was over a foot short of my PR," Kylee stated. "Once I put it into perspective, I was proud of myself as I had achieved this as a freshman and knew I had more work to do."

Coming out of a standout performance, Kylee was hungry for more in her second collegiate track meet. As the Aggies traveled to New Mexico, Kylee was preparing to put on a show once again and was excited to get the meet going as she had finally connected the dots to hit a PR. Unfortunately, the pit was not raked when Kylee was doing her practice jumps.

During the first practice jump into the sand pit, Kylee Davis hyperextended her right knee. The team's athletic trainer had to pull her out of the meet completely to evaluate her.

Kylee expressed that, "I knew something was wrong as soon as I got up from that practice jump as it felt like fluid was filling up in my knee.\

Multiple tests were run on over the course of the next week. After a week passed, the MRI report came back with horrible news. Kylee had torn the cartilage and partially torn the meniscus in her right knee.

"In the beginning of the injury it was really bad because being an athlete, you associate your worth as a person with how you perform in your respective sport. I have done track for the past 14 years of my life and it was hard being away from it," Kylee said. "I started to see the sports psych therapist as my mental health was derailing."

Going forward, Kylee had put a plan together to come back better than she once was. New goals were set for the next season. She had her eyes on restoring her confidence and getting stronger in the weight room.

"My main focus for track right now is to stay disciplined and get into that weight room for next season," Kylee declared. "This break away from track has helped me realize that I also need to work on the mental aspect of the sport."

In the 2023-2024 track season, Kylee is looking to set new school records and obliterate the competition. Be on the lookout for this extraordinary long jumper who will have you at the edge of your seats, you won't want to miss her.
