Scott's Seven-Goal Performance Leads Aggies Past Dukes

PITTSBURGH, Penn. – Powered by an unbelievable seven-goal showing from sophomore Alannah Scott, UC Davis earned its third straight win by defeating Duquesne 20-13 to conclude a perfect two-game stretch in Pennsylvania.

The Aggies (7-3) reached the 20-goal mark for the first time in 2023 while matching a season-high 40 shots. UC Davis held a 20-17 advantage on the draw and grabbed 20 ground balls to the Dukes' 12.

Alannah Scott posted a career-high seven goals in the match to lead UC Davis offensively. Her brilliant attacking display is just the 10th time in program history a player has scored seven or more goals in a single game.

Alex Agnew continued her excellent form by registering 10 total points, scoring five goals and dishing out five assists on the day. This matches the third-best single-game point tally in UC Davis history. The Davis native also became just the eighth Aggie to ever record five or more assists in a game.

Continuing her streak of hat tricks was Grace Gebhardt, recording her fifth straight game with three or more goals. The Lafayette, Calif. native scored four times as she leads the team with 31 goals on the year.

How It Happened
The Aggies scored two goals inside the first minute of the contest when Agnew connected with Gebhardt on back-to-back possessions to give their team an early 2-0 lead. However, the hosts would rally for four straight goals to take a 4-2 advantage at the 5:03 mark in the first quarter, forcing a UC Davis timeout.

Mia Lawrence ended the Dukes' run by firing home from close range before Agnew converted a free position chance to tie things up at 4-4. Ashley Laing came up with a huge save to stop a Duquesne free-position shot, and then the Aggies would take capitalize on the other end, as Scott skipped past a couple defenders before finding the back of the net to restore the lead. With just 14 seconds remaining in a frantic first period, Gebhardt completed her first-quarter hat trick as Agnew handed out her third assist to the sophomore, giving UC Davis a 6-4 lead after 15 minutes.

Scott canceled out an early Duquesne goal in the second quarter when Gebhardt picked her out with a well-timed pass in front of goal. The Dukes battled back once again, scoring twice to level the score at 7-7 with just over eight minutes left in the half. The two teams would trade goals before Scott netted her third goal of the game to record a hat trick of her own, putting the Aggies out in front. Lauren Hart got her name on the scoresheet before Scott scored her fourth and fifth goals of the game, with the last coming with just seconds left in the half, to give UC Davis a 12-10 lead at the break.

After the high-scoring first half, both offenses seemed to sputter and the goalkeepers would step up, as the two teams went scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the third quarter. Duquesne finally ended the scoring drought with 4:07 left in the period, bringing the Dukes within one. Rhea Cosand got the Aggies back on track by cashing in for her first goal of the contest before Agnew completed her hat trick to extend the lead to three goals (14-11). Agnew came up with a brilliant play in the final seconds of the third period by causing a turnover, picking up the ground ball, and scoring on the other end to make the score 15-11 heading into the last 15 minutes.

UC Davis took over in the fourth quarter when Scott, Gebhardt, and Agnew rattled off three consecutive goals to push the lead to seven (18-11), putting the Aggies out of sight. Scott was not done yet, however, tallying her seventh goal of the match to cap off her excellent afternoon. UC Davis cruised to the finish line, earning the 20-13 win to enjoy a perfect 2-0 start to the three-game road trip.
