DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis suffered its second straight defeat when UAlbany prevailed 17-15 in a back-and-forth contest inside UC Davis Health Stadium.
The Aggies (4-3) held a 5-3 lead after one quarter of play, but the Great Danes (4-4) held the advantage in the remaining three periods to eventually edge the two-goal victory.
UAlbany held the edge in nearly every offensive category but
Ashley Laing's brilliance in goal kept UC Davis in the game as the senior tallied a season-high 16 saves.
The Aggies turned to leading scorer
Grace Gebhardt yet again as she paced the attack with a team-high five goals.
Lauren Picardi reached a milestone with her first career hat trick while
Alannah Scott enjoyed a three-goal day of her own.
Alex Agnew posted three assists on the day while
Rhea Cosand also enjoyed a multi-goal game with two scores to her name.
How It Happened
UAlbany quickly netted two goals inside the first five minutes of the game to open an early 2-0 lead. The Aggies would answer, however, with five consecutive goals to build a 5-3 advantage. Picardi found her hat trick in just over three minutes to lead the charge while
Brooke Tokushige and Scott also etched their names on the scoresheet.
The Great Danes roared back into the game with a 4-0 run to regain the lead.
Ella Brislin fired into the back of the net to halt the UAlbany momentum and UC Davis would hang on for a 9-8 lead at the break.
Two Gebhardt goals accompanied by Cosand's second of the day would conclude an Aggie 3-0 run to start the second half. The Great Danes would not go away, scoring five goals while allowing just one in the remaining minutes of the third quarter, making it a one-goal deficit heading into the last 15 minutes.
UC Davis scored the first goal of the final period, but it would be all UAlbany the rest of the way, as four unanswered goals allowed the visitors to put the game to bed, earning the 17-15 victory.
