DAVIS, Calif. – Despite
Grace Gebhardt's career day, UC Davis let Marquette slip past for the 19-17 win on Sunday afternoon inside UC Davis Health Stadium.
The Aggies (4-2) see their win streak come to an end after four games following the narrow defeat. UC Davis used seven goals in the second period to take a lead into halftime, but the Golden Eagles regrouped and out-scored the Aggies 5-0 in the third quarter to build a lead they would never surrender.
Grace Gebhardt delivered an excellent performance with a career-high six goals on the day. The sophomore picked up five draw controls and dished out one assist in her stellar showing.
Ella Brislin was all over the field, posting a career-high 14 draw controls while recording a hat trick. Senior
Alex Agnew came through with another delightful game, registering her second hat trick of the season while handing out a pair of assists.
How It Happened
Marquette took control from the very start, rallying for five goals to open up a 5-1 lead and force an early UC Davis timeout. Just before the end of the first period, Gebhardt netted two goals to cut the deficit to 5-3 after 15 minutes.
Rhea Cosand and Brislin scored to quickly level the contest at 5-5 in the second quarter. Following a go-head goal from Marquette's Mary Schumar, the Aggies would score three unanswered goals courtesy of
Mia Lawrence, Brislin, and Gebhardt. In response, the Golden Eagles hit UC Davis for three goals of their own but Gebhardt and Cosand capped off an incredible second quarter with a pair of goals, giving the Aggies a 10-9 lead at the break.
A hot stretch from the Golden Eagles would give the visitors a massive advantage in the second half, as six straight goals would allow Marquette to build a 15-9 lead. Gebhardt and Agnew led the charge in the final quarter, with the latter netting her hat trick in less than six minutes, but the visitors would hang on for the 19-17 win to bring the UC Davis win streak to an end.
