DAVIS, Calif. – In a match that saw the UC Davis jump out to an early lead with a lightning quick goal from senior
Brooke Sanchez just 46 seconds into the game, it ultimately was the Michigan State Spartans who were victorious in this match after taking down the Aggies 2-5 Friday afternoon.
Heatwaves were the story of the week coming into this match and it was the Spartans who stayed hot themselves after improving to 3-0 on the season. UC Davis drops to 0-2 in 2022.
The day was highlighted by the aforementioned goal by Sanchez just 46 seconds into the match. After getting the ball on a breakaway, she was able to evade the lone defender and and find the back of the net against Michigan State's Monique Jardell. The Aggies other goal came later in the fourth period as senior
Milou Korthouwer was able to capitalize on a penalty corner set up by the junior duo of
Brenna Brophy and
Lizzy Tedrow. Even with the success UC Davis was able to find at the beginning and end of the match, it was the middle of the game that would prove to be fatal.
Michigan State applied pressure on goalkeeper
Kalli Wagnon all game despite her strong performance after recording seven saves on the day. Michigan State's 15 shots proved to be too much as they were able to connect with five goals.
Hannah Jarvie recorded two goals for the Spartans with Georgia Davies, Ellie Rutherford, and Merel Hanssen each adding one of their own.
After going into the half down just 1-2, Michigan State was able to grab two quick insurance goals making the score 1-4 just five minutes into the second half of play. In a day that saw the Michigan State Spartans barely out shoot the Aggies 15-13, it was apparent the discrepancy of the game came as a result of the shot on goal numbers, where Michigan State recorded 12 SOG's to UC Davis' 4.
UC Davis showed signs of brilliance this game but just wasn't able to come out on top against the red-hot Spartans. The Aggies will look to put together all the pieces and build on the momentum of Korthouwer's late goal this Sunday, Sept. 4 as they return back to Aggie Field Hockey Facility. Pushback will be at 9 a.m. after the game was originally scheduled for noon in an attempt to beat the Central Valley heatwave.
