Game Recap: Men's Water Polo | | Michael Gutnick - Assistant Director, Athletics Communications

UC Davis splits on Day 2 of Aggie Roundup

DAVIS, Calif. — On Day 2 of the Aggie Roundup, the No. 6 UC Davis men's water polo team fell to No. 3 Southern California 12-4, but then defeated No. 11 Princeton in a tight contest 9-8 at Schaal Aquatics Center on UC Davis campus on Saturday.

"First of all, I'd like to thank all of the people that have worked so hard to make this a great event," head coach Daniel Leyson said. "It has been an outstanding weekend of water polo and it will continue tomorrow. Schaal looks great. Our game against USC was educational. In the evening, we won a hard-fought game against a very good Princeton team. The game could have gone either way and in the end, it went our way."

Following today's results, the Aggies are now 2-1 at home and 6-2 overall this season.

The Trojans started off hot, scoring five goals in the opening period while allowing none. Both teams traded three goals each in the second frame. UC Davis had trouble with the USC defense that only allowed one more goal in the second half. Will Nomura, Ben Fleming, Colin Nicholls and Joshua Davis scored the goals for the Aggies against the Trojans.

In the nightcap, a pair of goals each by Aaron Voggenthaler, Levi Murtaugh, Connor Norton propelled the Aggies in the narrow 9-8 win.

Princeton jumped out to an early lead, 4-3, after eight minutes. Both teams added a goal in the second quarter. Two big saves on penalty shots by Aaron Wilson kept the Aggies within reach. Voggenthaler scored two goals in the third period to give UC Davis its first lead of the night.

The Tigers put on the pressure late, but the Aggies survived the push and held on to secure the victory.

The Aggie Roundup continues tomorrow, but the Aggies do not play as they will next travel to Palo Alto, Calif. for the MPSF Invitational on Sept. 23.
